The School Librarian is responsible for managing the school library, fostering a love for reading among students, and supporting the academic curriculum by providing access to relevant learning resources. The role involves organizing library materials, assisting students and staff, and promoting effective use of information.
Key Responsibilities
1. Library Management
- Organize, catalog, and maintain books, journals, and digital resources
- Ensure proper classification and easy accessibility of library materials
- Maintain records of issued and returned books
2. Student Engagement
- Encourage reading habits and library usage among students
- Conduct storytelling sessions, reading programs, and book fairs
- Guide students in selecting appropriate books
3. Academic Support
- Assist teachers in sourcing reference materials for lessons
- Support research and project work for students
- Provide access to digital and educational resources
4. Administration
- Maintain library inventory and stock verification
- Prepare reports on library usage and activities
- Ensure discipline and proper behavior within the library
5. Resource Development
- Recommend new books and learning materials
- Keep updated with current educational trends and literature
- Manage subscriptions to magazines, newspapers, and e-resources
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science (B.Lib) or equivalent
- Master’s Degree in Library Science (M.Lib) preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Strong organizational and cataloging skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of library management systems
- Passion for reading and student development
- Basic computer proficiency
Experience
- 1–3 years of experience in a school or academic library preferred
