The Role:
Senior, hands-on engineering leader in our R&D Portal organization, reporting to the VP of Engineering. Application Tech Leads on the team report into this role. This is a player-coach position — you own performance, growth, retention, and delivery, and you stay deep in the code: taking on the hardest problems, shipping production code, reviewing PRs, pairing, and running training. This is an AI-first engineering organization; you set the bar by example for high-quality AI-assisted engineering and the guardrails around it.
The Work -
Lead and grow the team — directly manage Application Tech Leads and Senior Developers; run 1:1s, performance, and career planning; coach Tech Leads into stronger leaders.- Stay hands-on — personally own the hardest, highest-risk problems; review PRs across the team; pair with engineers; run technical training and architecture reviews.
- Drive cross-geography delivery — partner with Tech Leads in other geographies; own sprint commitments, code-review SLAs, on-call rotations, and incident response. Coach and grow matrixed engineers (those who report functionally to leads in other geographies) the same as direct reports.
- Lead AI-led engineering — set the bar by example for AI-assisted PR quality; define guardrails for AI-generated code (review, testing, security, IP); measure adoption and impact; run upskilling on prompt engineering and agentic workflows.
- Architecture & quality — act as a credible architecture partner across pods; drive operational rigor (healthy CI, fast PR turnaround, low defect rate).
- Security & compliance — protect client data and uphold Apex Corporate Security Standards across the team.
The Must-Haves -
Four-year college degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or related discipline.- Extensive (10+ years) experience in software development with strong .NET / C# — and still actively writing production code today.
- Multiple years of direct people-management experience of engineers, including managing Tech Leads or Senior Engineers who themselves had reports. Direct people-management experience is required — Tech Lead experience alone will not qualify.
- Deep experience in application, database, and middle-tier design — .NET Core, MVC, REST, LINQ, Entity Framework, SQL Server (incl. stored procedures and SSRS).
- Track record of personally solving hard technical problems — production incidents, complex refactors, performance and scaling work.
- Demonstrable experience driving AI-assisted engineering practices in a team — with concrete examples of workflows changed, tools rolled out, and measurable outcomes.
- Comfortable with cross-time-zone delivery and sustained US-overlap working hours; strong written and spoken English.
Preferred
- React, microservices, Docker, and Kubernetes.
- Hands-on with AI coding agents beyond autocomplete — agent workflows, evaluation pipelines, prompt design, or custom tooling.
- B2B SaaS, procure-to-pay, supplier management, or adjacent enterprise domains.
