- Advise clients on complex multi-state SUT issues, including economic nexus (post-Wayfair), marketplace facilitator rules, drop-shipment scenarios, and product/service taxability.
- Provide structured, well-documented advisory memos and recommendations tailored to client industries (e.g., SaaS, e-commerce, manufacturing, retail, construction).
- Support clients through audits, notices, and state tax controversies, including drafting responses and representing clients before state tax authorities.
Compliance & Filing Oversight
- Oversee end-to-end SUT compliance — registrations, monthly/quarterly/annual filings, reconciliations, and payment processing across multiple US states and localities.
- Review returns prepared by the team for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Ensure compliance with state-specific rules, thresholds, and filing frequencies; monitor legislative changes and communicate impact to clients and internal teams.
- Manage exemption certificate collection, validation, and renewal processes.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of SUT analysts and senior associates; conduct performance reviews and training sessions.
- Allocate work, monitor deliverables, and ensure SLAs and turnaround times are consistently met.
- Build standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, and knowledge repositories to drive consistency and scalability.
Client Relationship Management
- Act as the primary point of contact for key client stakeholders (CFOs, Controllers, Tax Directors).
- Conduct periodic client review calls, present findings, and proactively identify tax planning and savings opportunities.
- Handle client escalations with professionalism and drive resolution.
Process & Technology
- Drive automation and process improvements using SUT compliance tools such as Avalara, Vertex, Sovos, TaxJar, or Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE.
- Collaborate with internal technology teams on workflow optimization and reporting dashboards.
Education & Experience
- B.Com / M.Com / MBA (Finance) or equivalent qualification.
- Additional certifications in US Taxation (e.g., CMI – Sales Tax, Avalara/Vertex certifications) will be a strong plus.
- 4 - 8 years of progressive experience in US Sales & Use Tax, with at least 3–5 years in a managerial or lead role.
- Prior experience with a Big 4, US-based consulting firm, or KPO/outsourced tax service provider strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience handling multi-state compliance, audits, VDAs, and nexus studies.
Technical Skills
- In-depth knowledge of US multi-state SUT laws, Wayfair economic nexus rules, and marketplace facilitator legislation.
- Hands-on experience with Avalara, Vertex, Sovos, TaxJar, ONESOURCE, or similar SUT platforms.
- Proficiency in MS Excel (advanced formulas, pivots, Power Query) and familiarity with ERP systems (NetSuite, QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics).
