Job Summary
The Pipe Fitter is responsible for the fabrication, installation, inspection, and maintenance of piping systems onboard ships and in shipyard facilities. This role involves working with various types of pipes used for fuel, water, steam, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems in compliance with shipbuilding standards and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret piping drawings, isometrics, and ship layout plans.
- Fabricate, cut, bend, thread, and assemble pipes using hand and power tools.
- Install piping systems for fuel, ballast, bilge, fire-fighting, cooling, hydraulic, and compressed air systems.
- Align, fit, and secure pipes, valves, fittings, and supports onboard vessels.
- Perform pressure testing and leak testing of installed piping systems.
- Coordinate with welders for pipe joint welding and ensure proper fit-up.
- Install pipe hangers, brackets, and supports as per drawings.
- Maintain proper material identification and traceability as per shipyard requirements.
- Follow safety procedures, hot work permits, and confined space entry rules.
- Carry out repairs, replacements, and modifications during new building and ship repair projects.
- Maintain housekeeping and tool control in work areas.
Skills & Competencies
- Ability to read isometric and P&ID drawings.
- Knowledge of marine piping systems and materials (CS, SS, Cu-Ni, PVC, etc.).
- Experience with pipe bending machines and flange alignment tools.
- Good understanding of shipyard safety practices.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Teamwork and coordination with other trades.
Qualifications & Experience
- ITI / Trade Certificate in Pipe Fitting or related trade preferred.
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in shipbuilding or ship repair projects.
- Knowledge of classification society requirements (DNV, ABS, LR, BV, IRS, etc.) is an advantage.
- Medical fitness for shipyard and onboard work.
