Architect
VillaRaj | A Private Classical Residence | Ahmedabad
Client-side design coordination and information control. Full-time, on-site. Reports directly to the Owner.
Essential: Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). Applications without an architecture degree will not be reviewed.
The Project
VillaRaj is a private neoclassical residence under construction in Ahmedabad, designed by one of the United Kingdom’s foremost classical architecture practices and supported by a team of international and Indian consultants. It is a building of unusual ambition for India: classical orders, dressed stonework, and craft-intensive detail executed to drawing-perfect tolerance — a structural sandstone envelope, not cladding, where a ten-millimetre deviation distorts the rhythm of a façade.
There is very little classical architecture of this calibre being built anywhere in the country. The practice’s name and full project particulars will be shared with shortlisted candidates.
The Role
This is a single, pivotal seat on the Owner’s team. You will be the architect who stands guard over design intent — the person through whom every drawing, revision, detail, and decision passes between the UK practice, the consultant team, and the site. The work is the discipline of design management: keeping the project’s information true, current, and answered, so that what is built is exactly what was drawn.
It is an architect’s job in the deepest sense. You will live inside large-scale classical details daily — reading orders, mouldings, and stone-jointing the way a musician reads a score — and you will catch the conflict before the stone is cut. For the right young architect, this is a rare apprenticeship in classical detail at a standard no ordinary Indian project can offer, and a once-in-a-career portfolio line.
What You Will Own
- Guardianship of design intent. Hold the architect’s drawings as the single source of truth; ensure the built form matches the classical geometry exactly, and that the site builds only from current, approved drawings.
- Shop-drawing and detail review. Interrogate contractor and vendor shop drawings — stonework, joinery, metalwork — against the architect’s details, and flag every conflict before fabrication. This is the heart of the role.
- Drawing control. Maintain the master drawing register and revision control with absolute discipline.
- RFIs and design queries. Own the RFI log: raise, track, and chase queries with the UK practice and consultants so that no question to the design team dies on the vine.
- Correspondence and record. Draft, issue, and file project correspondence on the Owner’s behalf; keep a complete, retrievable project record.
- Meetings and decisions. Convene and minute design and progress meetings; carry every decision and action through to closure.
- Weekly reporting. Give the Owner one concise weekly note — drawing status, open queries, decisions required — and nothing they have to decode.
Who We Are Looking For
- A qualified architect. B.Arch, with roughly 3–6 years in a serious architectural practice or on the design-management side of a high-quality building project. This is non-negotiable.
- Fluent in drawings. You read and interrogate plans, sections, large-scale details, and schedules with genuine ease — not as paperwork, but as architecture.
- Excellent written English. You will correspond daily with a UK practice and international consultants, and your emails must read as theirs do.
- Organised to the point of obsession. Registers, logs, version discipline, and minutes are second nature.
- Drawn to the classical. A real interest in classical architecture, craft, and construction detail will set you apart. Experience with stone, heritage, or high-end residential work is a strong advantage.
What the Role Offers
Direct, daily exposure to one of the most distinguished classical practices working today, on a building unlike anything else being constructed in India. The position reports directly to the Owner, carries real authority over the project’s information, and offers compensation commensurate with experience and calibre. For an architect who cares about how buildings are actually made, there is no better place to spend the next three years.
