System Administrator (CSE Department)
Role Objective
To manage, maintain, and secure the department's computing infrastructure, ensuring high uptime for academic instruction, specialized research labs, and student projects. The candidate will act as the technical backbone for both faculty and students.
Key Responsibilities1. Infrastructure & Server Management
- Multi-OS Administration: Deploy and maintain Windows, Linux (Ubuntu/CentOS/Debian), and macOS environments.
- Virtualization & Cloud: Manage local virtualization clusters (VMware, Proxmox, or KVM) and cloud instances (AWS/Azure) for specialized coursework.
- Hardware Maintenance: Oversee the health of server racks, high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, and individual laboratory workstations.
2. Network & Security
- VLAN & Lab Isolation: Configure and manage department-specific VLANs to isolate student "sandbox" projects from the main school network.
- Firewall & Access: Manage firewalls, VPNs, and SSH access for remote research and student labs.
- Security Audits: Conduct regular vulnerability scans and ensure all machines are patched against the latest exploits.
3. Academic & Research Support
- Lab Provisioning: Set up specialized environments for AI/ML (GPU drivers, CUDA), Cybersecurity (isolated networks), and Software Engineering (GitLab/GitHub Enterprise, CI/CD runners).
- License Management: Administer academic software licenses (MATLAB, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.).
- User Lifecycle: Manage Active Directory or LDAP accounts for rotating batches of students and visiting faculty.
4. Backup & Disaster Recovery
- Maintain rigorous backup schedules for departmental databases, research data, and faculty repositories.
- Develop and test a Disaster Recovery Plan to ensure minimal downtime during exam seasons.
Required Technical Skills
- Scripting: Proficiency in Bash, Python, or PowerShell for task automation and system monitoring.
- Networking: Deep understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and Subnetting.
- Web Services: Experience managing Web Servers (Nginx, Apache) and Database Management Systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL).
- Containerization: Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes for modern application deployment.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience: 3–5 years in system administration, preferably in an academic or R&D environment.
- Certifications (Preferred): RHCSA (Linux), CompTIA Network+/Security+, or Azure/AWS Administrator Associate.
Soft Skills
- Patience: Ability to troubleshoot issues with students who are still learning fundamental concepts.
- Clear Communication: Translating complex technical requirements into budget requests for non-technical school leadership.
- Adaptability: Staying updated with the rapidly evolving tech stack used in CSE curriculum.
