Key Responsibilities
- Machine Operation: Manually operate lathes to perform turning, facing, boring, threading (metric and imperial), tapering, and knurling.
- Setup & Tooling: Select and grind HSS (High-Speed Steel) or carbide cutting tools; set up 3-jaw and 4-jaw chucks, steady rests, and tailstocks.
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols to plan the machining sequence.
- Precision Measurement: Use manual inspection tools (micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, and thread wires) to ensure parts meet tolerances often within +/- 0.02mm.
- Material Selection: Adjust spindle speeds and feed rates based on the specific properties of the material being cut.
- Maintenance: Perform daily oiling/lubrication and chip removal; identify when the machine requires mechanical repair or adjustment.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: 2–5+ years of experience specifically on manual/conventional lathes (e.g., Harrison, Colchester, or similar industrial brands).
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of thread-cutting math and gear ratios for manual gearboxes.
- Math Skills: Strong proficiency in shop math, including geometry and trigonometry.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long shifts and manually move heavy handwheels or workpieces.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to spot tool wear or "chatter" by sound and vibration before it ruins a part.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience with other manual machines (Milling machines, Grinders, Drill presses).
- Completion of a formal Machinist Apprenticeship or ITI Certification.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision on "one-off" repair jobs or prototypes.
Typical Work Environment
- Fast-paced machine shop or maintenance department.
- Exposure to machining oils, coolants, and metal shavings.
- Requirement to wear PPE (Safety glasses, steel-toe boots, ear protection)
