Job description
The Project Head (Exhibits & Museums) leads the end-to-end realization of complex museum galleries, science centers, and immersive permanent/temporary exhibitions. This role bridges spatial design, creative content, structural engineering, multimedia integration, and fabrication. You will oversee cross-functional teams of architects, digital media producers, content specialists, and fabrication vendors to turn conceptual designs into safe, functional, and engaging physical spaces delivered on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Leadership & Management
· Oversee the end-to-end lifecycle of exhibit projects from conceptual design through fabrication, installation, testing, and closeout.
· Manage project budgets (often multi-crore value), scope, master schedules, resource allocation, and cash flows.
· Lead multi-disciplinary project teams, including internal staff, architects, curatorial experts, content creators, and external trade contractors.
· Manage procurement, RFP processes, contract negotiations, and vendor execution for audio-visual (AV), interactive software, scenic fabrication, and specialized display cases.
2. Technical & Architectural Execution
· Translate spatial designs and curatorial concepts into buildable, structurally sound technical documentation.
· Review and approve CAD shop drawings, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) integration plans, structural calculations, and material specifications.
· Oversee the integration of complex Audio-Visual (AV), IT infrastructure, lighting design, environmental controls, and interactive hardware/software within exhibit architecture.
· Ensure all exhibits comply with local building codes, safety regulations, fire codes, life-safety standards, and accessibility requirements (e.g., ADA, UK Equality Act).
3. Design & Quality Direction
· Maintain design integrity throughout the engineering, value engineering, and prototyping phases.
· Direct prototype development and mockups for mechanical interactives, tactile displays, and digital software user interfaces.
· Establish conservation standards for display cases (vitrines), climate/humidity controls, and lighting levels to protect sensitive artifacts.
4. Site Supervision & Operations
· Direct on-site construction, set-building, rigging, artifact mounting, lighting focus, and technical commissioning.
· Enforce quality control (QC) and health and safety compliance during site work.
· Oversee final punch lists, operational handover to museum operations staff, and post-installation maintenance protocols.
Required Qualifications & Technical Skills
· Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture, Exhibit Design, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.
· Experience: 8+ years in exhibit/museum project delivery, with at least 3–5 years in a senior leadership or management role.
· Drafting & Design Software: Proficiency in CAD platforms (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or Rhino), 3D visualization (SketchUp, 3ds Max, or Revit), and Adobe Creative Cloud.
· Technical Domain Knowledge:
o Structural framing, joinery, scenic fabrication, plastics, metals, and finish materials.
o Display case engineering, conservation-grade materials, and climate control (HVAC/microclimates).
o AV systems (projection mapping, sensors, media players, spatial audio) and interactive hardware (touchscreens, microcontrollers, mechanical gears).
o Museum-grade lighting systems (DMX controls, fiber optics, LED color rendering index/CRI).
· Project Management Tools: Proficiency in MS Project, Primavera, Smartsheet, or Asana.
Key Competencies
· Technical Problem-Solving: Ability to solve complex engineering challenges when translating creative art into stable physical structures.
· Stakeholder Management: Skill in balancing priorities between creative directors, historians/curators, external fabricators, and executive sponsors.
· Vendor & Contract Expertise: Experience managing complex FIDIC/construction contracts, SLA agreements, and fabrication suppliers.
