Job Purpose
To ensure safe, continuous, and efficient operation of utility systems supporting Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) processes including CGL, Continuous Annealing Furnace, Pickling Line, and associated finishing units by managing gas, water, air, power, and thermal utilities in compliance with safety and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Utility Operations & Maintenance
- Operate and maintain CRM utility systems including:
- Gas yard (LPG, Propane, Ammonia)
- PSA Nitrogen Plant (~300Nm3/hr) and Ammonia cracker (~300 NM³/hr)
- Water treatment systems (DM, RO, Softener, ETP)
- Pump houses, cooling towers, chillers
- Air compressors and compressed air networks
- Fire hydrant and fire protection systems
- Exhaust, ventilation, and blower systems
- Ensure uninterrupted utility supply to:
- Cold Rolling Mill (CRM)
- Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL)
- Continuous Annealing Furnace (CAF)
- Pickling Line and Skin Pass Mill
2. Furnace & Process Gas Systems
- Operate and monitor Non-Ox Furnaces in Continuous Galvanizing and Annealing Lines, including:
- Dew point control and monitoring
- Furnace temperature and pressure regulation
- H₂ concentration and O₂ PPM monitoring
- Operation of HNX heaters
- Management of pre- and post-combustion temperature zones
- Maintain process gas analyzers and safety interlocks.
3. Automation & Control Systems
- Monitor and control utility operations using PLC, HMI, SCADA, and DCS systems.
- Support furnace start-up, shutdown, and emergency handling.
- Analyze trends, alarms, and interlocks for stable CRM operations.
4. Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure strict compliance with:
- Industrial safety standards
- Gas handling and storage regulations
- Environmental and statutory norms
- Conduct risk assessments, SOP reviews, and safety audits for utility systems.
- Lead emergency response actions for gas leaks, furnace trips, and utility failures.
5. Energy & Performance Management
- Monitor and optimize:
- Utility consumption (power, water, gas)
- Furnace efficiency and fuel usage
- Perform energy loss analysis and implement efficiency improvement initiatives.
- Prepare daily, monthly, and annual utility performance reports.
6. Inventory & Documentation
- Manage inventory for utility consumables and mechanical spares.
- Ensure availability of critical spares to avoid CRM downtime.
- Maintain and update:
- SOPs
- Utility log sheets
- Statutory Compliance
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- 3-5 years of experience in:
- Steel plant utilities
- Cold Rolling Mill / CGL / Annealing Furnace operations
- Hands-on experience with industrial gases, furnaces, and water systems.
