Role Overview
The Design Engineer – Mechanical will lead the complete mechanical design function for automation projects. This role is responsible for concept development, customer interfacing, design quality, and on-time delivery of automation systems such as test rigs, line automation, robotic cells, and vision-based systems.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Strategy
- Own the mechanical design function for automation and test rig projects. Define design standards, best practices, and workflows. Review and approve concepts, layouts, and detailed designs. Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and industry standards.
Project Execution
- mechanical design activities for: o Test rigs (functional, endurance, validation rigs)o Line automation and assembly systemso Robotic integration and automation cellso Vision inspection systemso Special Purpose Machines (SPMs) Plan design schedules and ensure on-time deliveryaligned with project milestones. Manage design changes, risks, and technical escalations.
Customer & Stakeholder Interface
- Act as the primary mechanical design interface with customers. Lead requirement discussions, design reviews, and technical negotiations. Translate customer needs into robust, cost-effective design solutions. Coordinate with internal teams—Electrical, Controls, Manufacturing, Purchase, and Quality.
Manufacturing & Execution Support
- Support procurement, vendor development, and cost optimization. Provide design support during fabrication, assembly, integration, and commissioning. Participate in FAT/SAT and customer acceptance activities.
Required Skills & Competencies
Technical Expertise
- Strong hands-on experience in automation machine and test rig design Proven capability in:o Robotics and end-of-line automationo Vision system integrationo Pneumatic and electro-mechanical systemso Sensors, actuators, drives, and linear motion systems Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks / Creo / Inventor) Excellent knowledge of GD&T, materials, manufacturing processes, and cost engineering
Leadership & Communication
- Strong people management and mentoring skills Excellent customer communication and presentation abilities Ability to drive cross-functional collaboration Structured problem-solving and decision-making skills
Education
- B.E / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (Diploma with strong experience may be considered)
Preferred Background
- Automation and SPM manufacturers Test rigs for automotive, railway, or industrial OEMs Robotics and vision-based automation integrators
