Job Summary
The Veterinary Assistant plays a crucial role in providing high-quality care to patients and supporting the veterinary team. This position involves patient care, medical procedures, surgical support, teamwork, and continuous improvement. The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for delivering compassionate care, adhering to medical policies and procedures, maintaining inventory control, managing OPD procedures, supporting surgical operations, collaborating with the team, and seeking opportunities for professional growth.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care
- Provide compassionate care to patients, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
- Handle and restrain stressed, ill, or injured animals effectively and safely.
- Adhere to the clinic's medical policies and procedures during patient care.
- Maintain inventory for medical supplies, ensuring availability and proper storage.
- Perform regular maintenance of clinical assets and equipment, ensuring functionality and cleanliness.
2. OPD Management – Medical Procedures and Treatments
- Prepare patients for OPD medical procedures, including medical assessment, administering injections, and oral medications.
- Collect and send tissue and fluid samples to the laboratory for analysis, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
3. Operation Theater Management & Surgical Support
- Adhere to pre-surgical protocols, including patient grooming, preparation of examination rooms, and sterilization of instruments.
- Prepare patients for surgical procedures, ensuring their comfort and safety.
- Assist in pre-anesthetic procedures accurately, including induction, intubation, and patient preparation.
- Follow post-surgical protocols, including patient monitoring and maintaining cleanliness of the surgery suite and instruments.
- Manage cages, including cleaning and routine care for animals kept in cages.
4. Teamwork and Collaboration
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with veterinarians and other team members to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality, ensuring smooth clinic operations.
- Adhere to company policies and practices, including professional ethics and confidentiality.
- Willingly assist and support other staff members when needed, promoting a positive team environment.
Qualifications and Skills
- Diploma or Degree in Veterinary Technology, Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry, or equivalent qualification.
- Previous experience as a Veterinary Assistant/Technician is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of patient care, medical procedures, and surgical support.
- Proficient in handling and restraining animals safely.
- Ability to follow clinical protocols accurately and maintain inventory control.
- Knowledge of anesthesia procedures and pre- and post-operative care.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical ability to lift and move animals and equipment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and emergency situations if required.
