Senior Staff Nurse-Job Description
Job Summary
The Senior Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering high-quality nursing care, supervising and mentoring nursing staff, coordinating with doctors and allied healthcare professionals, and ensuring patient safety and operational excellence. The role requires strong clinical expertise, leadership skills, and adherence to infection control, quality, and patient care standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Patient Care
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients.
- Monitor patients' vital signs, clinical condition, and treatment progress.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, injections, and treatments as prescribed.
- Assist doctors during consultations, diagnostic procedures, minor surgeries, and emergencies.
- Prepare patients before and after procedures and provide post-procedure care.
- Identify and promptly escalate any deterioration in patient condition.
Nursing Leadership
- Supervise, guide, and support Staff Nurses, Nursing Assistants, and trainees.
- Allocate nursing duties and ensure adequate staffing during each shift.
- Mentor junior staff and monitor adherence to nursing standards.
- Conduct shift handovers and ensure continuity of patient care.
Patient Safety & Quality
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control protocols.
- Follow biomedical waste segregation and disposal guidelines.
- Maintain patient safety standards and report clinical incidents or near misses.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and accreditation activities.
Documentation
- Maintain accurate nursing records, medication charts, treatment documentation, and patient assessments.
- Ensure proper documentation of admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with hospital policies.
Coordination
- Coordinate effectively with consultants, medical officers, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, front office, and other departments.
- Educate patients and their families regarding treatment plans, medications, discharge instructions, and preventive healthcare.
- Ensure smooth patient flow and timely completion of clinical procedures.
Inventory & Equipment Management
- Ensure availability of emergency drugs, consumables, and nursing supplies.
- Monitor the functioning of medical equipment and report maintenance requirements.
- Maintain crash carts and emergency equipment in a ready-to-use condition.
Emergency Management
- Respond efficiently to medical emergencies and provide Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), if certified.
- Assist in emergency stabilization and patient transfers when required.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Prepare nursing reports and maintain unit records.
- Participate in departmental meetings, continuing nursing education (CNE), and staff training.
- Support implementation of hospital policies, SOPs, and nursing protocols.
Required Qualifications
- B.Sc. Nursing or General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM) from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration with the Karnataka Nursing Council (KNC) or Indian Nursing Council (INC).
- Minimum 5 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in a hospital or multi-specialty healthcare facility.
- BLS certification is mandatory; ACLS certification is preferred.
