Backend Engineer - Farmer Experience
POSITION PURPOSE:
We are hiring a hands-on Backend Engineer to build, operate, and own the microservices that power FarmRise — a platform that puts agronomic advice directly into the hands of smallholder farmers. This is not a role where you hand off deployment and operations to someone else: you will design the service, write the code, own the AWS infrastructure it runs on, and be the first call when it breaks in production.
You will work across services spanning user onboarding, agronomy, commodity pricing, news/events, and third-party integrations. We are looking for someone who treats a production incident or an ambiguous requirement as their problem to solve, not someone waiting to be assigned a ticket.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
What You Will Own — End to End
- Service design & architecture: design and evolve Java + Spring Boot microservices and REST APIs consumed by the FarmRise mobile app and internal platforms; make and document trade-offs on data modeling, service boundaries, and API contracts.
- Cloud infrastructure (AWS): own the full runtime your services live on — ECS/Fargate for compute, RDS/Aurora Postgres for persistence, S3 for storage, CloudWatch/CloudTrail for logs and audit, SNS/AmazonMQ for messaging, CloudFront for delivery, ElastiCache for caching — plus IAM, VPC/networking, and secrets management. You provision, tune, and troubleshoot this infrastructure yourself, not through a separate DevOps team.
- Async & event-driven systems: design event/queue-based workflows on RabbitMQ (or SQS/SNS) — producers, consumers, retry and dead-letter handling, idempotency, and back-pressure — for resilient, decoupled processing.
- Data layer: design Postgres schemas, indexes, and queries for correctness and performance at scale; own migrations and query optimization as data volume grows.
- Observability & reliability: instrument services with structured logging and metrics (Datadog/CloudWatch), define SLOs, set up alerting, and drive scalability, availability, and fault-tolerance practices across the platform.
- CI/CD & quality: maintain build and release pipelines (GitHub Actions, Maven/Gradle, SonarQube, JUnit); keep test coverage, code quality gates, and deployment safety nets healthy.
- Security: apply JWT-based auth patterns and platform security conventions; treat data privacy and secure coding as a default, not an afterthought.
What You Will Do Day to Day
- Ship backend features and services against explicit expectations for reliability, latency, and cost — not just “it works on my machine.”
- Deploy and operate services on AWS, including scaling decisions, cost tuning, and incident response when something breaks in production.
- Debug production issues end-to-end using logs, metrics, and traces — and own the fix, not just the diagnosis.
- Build and evolve shared libraries, interceptors, and API standards that improve developer experience across the platform.
- Use AI developer tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) deliberately to speed up code generation, debugging, refactoring, and documentation — while following secure coding and data privacy practices.
- Partner directly with product, mobile, and platform teams to turn ambiguous requirements into scoped, reliable services — and push back when a request is not the right build.
- Review code from other engineers with a focus on quality, performance, security, and maintainability.
WHO YOU ARE:
Required:
- 4–10 years of backend engineering experience building and operating production services — not just writing code that others deploy.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful API design, with real production systems you can walk through in depth.
- Proven, hands-on AWS experience: you have personally deployed, scaled, and debugged services on ECS/Fargate, RDS/Aurora, S3, and CloudWatch — including IAM and VPC/networking troubleshooting. You do not need someone else to touch the AWS console for you.
- Solid grounding in microservices patterns — service boundaries, contract design, versioning, and scaling services independently.
- Practical, past experience with Postgres: schema design, indexing, and query optimization on production workloads.
- Hands-on experience with messaging/async systems, especially RabbitMQ (or SQS/SNS) — including retries, dead-letter queues, and idempotent consumers.
- Practical CI/CD experience: Git-based workflows, build tooling (Maven/Gradle), code quality gates (SonarQube), and unit testing (JUnit) as a default practice, not an exception.
- Strong, independent debugging skills across logs, metrics, and distributed systems — you can own a production issue from alert to resolution.
- Hands-on experience with AI developer tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) for code generation, debugging, refactoring, and documentation, applied with secure coding and data privacy discipline.
- Ownership mindset: a demonstrated track record of taking a problem statement, scoping it, and driving it to production without needing constant direction.
Preferred
- Familiarity with JWT auth flows and API gateway/routing patterns.
- Experience with caching strategies and HTTP caching concepts (ETags, max-age headers).
- Exposure to serverless patterns (Lambda), Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform/Terragrunt), and additional data stores (Redis/NoSQL).
- Experience operating services with centralized logging/monitoring stacks (Datadog, CloudWatch).
- Prior experience in Agri-tech, agri-inputs, rural commerce, or similar domains serving high-scale, low-connectivity users.
