Job Description: Costing Engineer - Manufacturing
Role overview
The Costing Engineer is responsible for converting customer RFQs and PDF drawings into accurate manufacturing cost estimates and commercially competitive quotations. The role bridges customer requirements, engineering interpretation, procurement coordination, and process costing by developing bill of materials, identifying bought-out items, and estimating internal manufacturing costs across fabrication and finishing operations.
Key responsibilities
Review customer RFQs, PDF drawings, specifications, and commercial requirements to understand product scope, technical details, and costing inputs
Develop detailed BOMs from customer drawings and segregate items category-wise, including raw materials, fabricated parts, bought-out items, and outsourced processes.
Prepare and share the bought-out item list with the procurement team for supplier enquiries and commercial evaluation.
Identify laser cutting parts from customer drawings and coordinate with the design team to develop DXF files for nesting and manufacturing preparation.
Support nesting analysis to estimate raw material requirement, sheet utilization, and scrap percentage for laser-cut components.
Establish process-wise internal costing for manufacturing operations such as laser cutting, bending, welding, grinding, coating, packing, and other related fabrication activities.
Calculate material cost, labor cost, machine cost, outside processing cost, and overheads to build accurate bottom-up cost estimates.
Prepare competitive quotations in line with RFQ requirements, target margins, and business strategy.
Coordinate closely with procurement, design, production, and sales/commercial teams to ensure technical and commercial alignment during quotation preparation.
Maintain costing sheets, estimation assumptions, and RFQ records for future reference and continuous improvement.
Identify cost-saving opportunities, manufacturability concerns, and process improvement options during the estimation stage.
Detailed duties
RFQ and drawing analysis
Study customer PDF drawings, specifications, part dimensions, tolerances, material grades, and assembly requirements.
Interpret fabrication sequence and identify whether components are manufactured in-house, purchased, or subcontracted.
Highlight missing technical inputs or commercial gaps before finalizing the estimate.
BOM development and coordination
Create structured BOMs for assemblies and sub-assemblies.
Segregate BOMs into categories such as raw material, laser cut parts, bent parts, welded assemblies, bought-out components, standard hardware, coating items, and packing materials.
Release bought-out item lists to procurement for supplier costing and lead-time confirmation.
Release laser cutting part lists to design for DXF generation and nesting support.
Cost estimation
Estimate raw material consumption based on nesting output, utilization ratio, and expected scrap percentage.
Prepare routing-based or activity-based cost estimates for fabrication and finishing processes.
Define operation-wise costing for welding, bending, grinding, coating, assembly, inspection, packing, and dispatch preparation.
Include external services, consumables, tooling implications, and logistics assumptions where applicable.
Validate costing assumptions with production and relevant internal stakeholders before quotation submission.
Skills and qualifications
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
3-8 years of experience in costing, estimation, production engineering, or quotation preparation in a sheet metal, fabrication, or general manufacturing environment.
Strong ability to read PDF drawings, fabrication drawings, and customer specifications.
Good knowledge of BOM preparation, manufacturing processes, nesting concepts, raw material utilization, and scrap calculation.
Working knowledge of fabrication processes such as laser cutting, bending, welding, grinding, coating, and packing.
Strong commercial awareness with the ability to prepare competitive and technically correct quotations.
Proficiency in Excel and costing formats; familiarity with ERP systems and CAD/DXF workflow is preferred.
Good coordination and communication skills to work with procurement, design, production, and sales teams.

Preferred profile
The ideal candidate should have strong exposure to sheet metal and fabrication costing, be comfortable working from customer PDF drawings, and possess the ability to translate engineering requirements into a clear BOM, process plan, and competitive commercial quotation. The candidate should be detail-oriented, analytical, and capable of handling multiple RFQs within tight deadlines.
Pay: ₹35,093.67 - ₹49,667.22 per month
