Job Description: Operation Theatre (OT) Technician

Qualifications: Diploma (DOTT) or B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology
Experience: 2–5 years of hands-on experience in a multi-specialty hospital environment
Job Purpose
To maintain the operational readiness of the OT floor, manage the sterilization of surgical equipment (Autoclave/ETO), and provide technical scrub assistance across specialized surgical departments including Obstetrics (LSCS), General Surgery, and Urology.
Key Responsibilities1. Clinical Scrub Assistance & Specialties
- LSCS (Obstetrics): Prepare sterile sets for emergency and elective C-sections. Anticipate the surgeon’s needs for rapid incisions, neonatal delivery, and layered uterine closure.
- General Surgery: Assemble and test instruments for both open and laparoscopic procedures (cholecystectomies, appendectomies, etc.). Manage trocars, graspers, and harmonic scalpel setups.
- Urology: Handle delicate endo-urological hardware, including cystoscopes and resectoscopes. Manage continuous fluid irrigation systems for TURP/TURBT and ensure the integrity of fiber-optic cables.
- Safety Protocols: Conduct rigorous verbal counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with the nursing staff before the first incision and before the final skin closure.
2. Floor & Equipment Management
- OT Readiness: Perform pre-operative checks on anesthesia workstations, suction units, diathermy machines, and medical gas pipelines to ensure 100% functionality.
- Floor Turnaround: Coordinate the efficient cleaning and resetting of the OT between cases to maintain a smooth surgical schedule while strictly following infection control protocols.
- Inventory: Monitor and maintain stock levels of surgical consumables, sutures, and specialized implants required for the day's procedures.
3. Sterilization & CSSD (Autoclave & ETO)
- Steam Autoclaving: Responsible for the cleaning, wrapping, and sterilization of all metal instrument trays. Perform and document daily BowieDick tests and vacuum leak tests.
- ETO Sterilization: Manage the sterilization of heat-sensitive items (laparoscopic cameras, urological scopes, etc.). Ensure correct gas exposure and mandatory aeration times to prevent toxic residue.
- Traceability: Maintain detailed logs of all sterilization cycles, including chemical and biological indicators, to ensure every instrument set is fully traceable to the patient.
Technical Competencies
- Infection Control: Expert knowledge of aseptic techniques and Biomedical Waste (BMW) segregation.
- Equipment Handling: Proficiency in operating advanced autoclaves, ETO machines, and laparoscopic stacks.
- Emergency Response: Ability to stay calm and assist effectively during high-pressure emergency conversions.
