An Architectural Draftsman creates detailed technical drawings, blueprints, and 3D models from architect sketches and specifications using CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit). They incorporate structural, electrical, and MEP details, ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations. They often facilitate construction by preparing layouts, site plans, and material estimates.
Key Responsibilities
- Drafting & Design: Convert conceptual sketches into accurate 2D layouts and 3D models using CAD software like AutoCAD or Revit.
- Technical Compliance: Ensure all drawings adhere to building regulations, zoning laws, and safety codes.
- Project Coordination: Collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams to revise drawings based on site feedback.
- Documentation: Prepare detailed structural, electrical, and mechanical drawings (MEP) and "Good for Construction" (GFC) sets.
- Site Analysis: Assist in surveying, gathering on-site measurements, and ensuring design accuracy during construction.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Software Proficiency: Strong skills in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or similar modeling software.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of architectural design, construction methods, and building materials.
- Drafting Expertise: Ability to create precise, detailed technical drawings.
- Detail-Oriented: Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy in structural calculations and dimensions.
Education and Experience
- Typically requires a diploma or degree in Architectural Drafting, Architecture, or a related field.
- Previous experience as a draftsman or in a similar role is usually required.
Difference from Architect
While architects focus on the concept, design, and aesthetic of the building, a draftsman focuses on the technical precision, regulations, and detailed drafting required to make the building buildable.
