Senior PCB Architect – Railway Traction & Auxiliary Converter Systems
Experience: 4+ Years (Mandatory Railway Domain Experience)
Location: Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
Role Overview
We are looking for a experienced PCB Design Specialist / PCB Architect with 4+ years of proven expertise in railway domain.
This role is not for general PCB designers. The candidate must have independently handled safety-critical, high-reliability, multilayer controller boards used in traction propulsion systems operating in harsh railway environments (high vibration, surge, EMI, high voltage).
The candidate will own the complete PCB lifecycle — from stack-up definition to validation support.
Key Responsibilities
1. PCB Architecture & Stack-Up Ownership
- Define PCB stack-up (6–14+ layers) for high-noise traction environments.
- Design for:
- 1000V–3000V DC systems
- High dv/dt environments (IGBT switching)
- Isolation boundaries (functional + reinforced)
- Control impedance and return path integrity.
- Define grounding architecture (star/segregated/hybrid based on topology).
- Lead PCB design reviews and sign-off.
2. Railway-Grade Compliance & Safety Design
Hands-on experience designing boards compliant with:
- EN 50155
- EN 50121
- IEC 60571
Must understand:
- Creepage & clearance for pollution degree 3 environments
- Surge withstand capability
- EFT / ESD robustness
- Vibration-resistant PCB design practices
- Conformal coating considerations
3. Controller Board Expertise (Traction & Auxiliary Converters)
Demonstrated layout experience in:
- DSP-based control boards (e.g., TMS320F2837xD or equivalent)
- Isolated ADC front-end circuits
- High-accuracy current & voltage sensing circuits
- CAN communication (isolated, railway hardened)
- Gate driver interface routing (noise-immune layout)
- Fault detection and protection circuits
Strong understanding of:
- Signal integrity in mixed-signal boards
- Ground loop mitigation
- Isolation barrier placement strategy
- Thermal stress management
4. EMI/EMC Ownership
- Layout strategies for EMI containment in traction systems.
- Experience in passing pre-compliance and final EMC tests.
- Ability to debug radiated and conducted emission failures.
- Design for immunity against:
- High dv/dt switching
- Common-mode noise
- Fast transients
5. Full Lifecycle Responsibility
- Schematic-to-layout translation ownership
- Gerber / ODB++ generation
- Stack-up and impedance documentation
- Fabrication & assembly coordination
- Prototype bring-up support
- Failure analysis & corrective layout revisions
Mandatory Requirements
- 10–15 years PCB design experience
- Minimum 7+ years in railway traction / propulsion systems
- Proven track record of successfully deployed traction controller boards
- Experience with 8+ layer boards in high-noise environments
- Deep knowledge of IPC-2221, IPC-7351
- Strong hands-on experience in Altium / Allegro / OrCAD
Strongly Preferred
- Experience in IGBT-based traction converters (50 kW to MW class)
- Experience in auxiliary converters for rolling stock
- Knowledge of busbar-to-PCB interfacing
- Experience in DFM / DFA optimization for railway production volumes
- Prior involvement in type testing / railway certification cycles
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who:
- Can independently architect complex controller boards
- Understands traction system-level behaviour (not just layout)
- Has handled safety-critical failures and root cause analysis
- Can mentor junior designers
- Can interact confidently with hardware, firmware, and testing teams
