JOB DESCRIPTION (JD) – LAB HOD (DRI PLANT)
Designation: Head of Department (HOD) – Laboratory
Department: Quality Control / Laboratory
Plant: DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) Plant
Reporting To: Plant Head / Technical Head
1. Purpose of the Job
To lead and manage all laboratory activities related to raw materials, coal, iron ore/pellets, DRI, char, and other process materials, ensuring accurate and timely quality analysis to support smooth and efficient DRI plant operations.
2. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all laboratory operations and laboratory personnel.
- Ensure timely sampling and testing of:
- Iron Ore / Pellets
- Coal
- Dolomite / Limestone
- DRI / Sponge Iron
- Char
- Other raw materials and finished products
- Monitor chemical and physical quality parameters as per plant requirements.
- Ensure accurate reporting of laboratory test results to the concerned departments.
- Coordinate with the Process, Production, Purchase, and Quality departments.
- Maintain laboratory instruments, equipment, and calibration schedules.
- Ensure proper maintenance and availability of laboratory chemicals and consumables.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly quality reports.
- Identify quality deviations and immediately inform the concerned department.
- Monitor incoming raw material quality and ensure compliance with approved specifications.
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory activities.
- Ensure proper sample collection, labeling, storage, and record maintenance.
- Train and guide laboratory chemists, analysts, and technicians.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and proper use of PPE in the laboratory.
- Participate in internal and external quality audits.
- Investigate abnormal test results and recommend corrective actions.
- Control laboratory costs and optimize the consumption of chemicals and consumables.
- Maintain all laboratory documentation and records as per company requirements.
3. Technical Knowledge Required
- Chemical analysis of Iron Ore, Pellets, Coal, DRI, and Char.
- Proximate analysis of coal.
- Knowledge of moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and sulphur analysis.
- Knowledge of Fe (Total Iron), FeO, metallic iron, and other relevant DRI quality parameters.
- Knowledge of laboratory instruments and testing equipment.
- Calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Knowledge of ISO standards and quality management systems.
- Understanding of the DRI production process and its quality requirements.
4. Educational Qualification
B.Sc./M.Sc. in Chemistry or Diploma/Degree in Metallurgy/Chemical Engineering or equivalent relevant qualification.
5. Experience
Minimum 8–15 years of experience in a laboratory, preferably in DRI/Sponge Iron, Steel, or Iron Ore industries.
6. Skills Required

- Knowledge of laboratory quality systems.
- Good communication and reporting skills.
- Ability to coordinate with multiple departments.
- Knowledge of MS Excel and report preparation.

Pay: ₹35,000.00 - ₹50,000.00 per month
