Department: Welding Shop / Production.
Location: Cheyyar, Tamil Nadu, India.
Reporting to: Supervisor / Production Manager
Employment Type: Full Time, [Day/Shift as applicable]
Experience Required: 6-8 years (heavy pipe fabrication / high-rise construction equipment preferred)
Education: Trade certificate (ITI in Welding/Fabrication) or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
Job Purpose
The Welding Operator will be responsible for executing welding operations on large-diameter boom pipes, elbows, reducers and other pipe components used in concrete-pumping vehicles for high-rise structures. This role includes reading and interpreting fabrication drawings, setting up and operating welding equipment and fixtures, performing high-quality welds in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), ensuring structural integrity and meeting quality, safety and production targets.
Key Responsibilities / Duties
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, shop fabrication drawings, welding symbols and work orders relating to boom-pipes, elbows, reducers (for concrete pumping applications).
- Prepare pipe ends (beveling, cleaning, fit up) including heavy spools, pipes, elbows and reducers aligning to joint specification.
- Set up and operate welding equipment (e.g. GMAW/MIG, TIG as applicable) with correct parameters (current, voltage, wire feed, shielding gas) according to the relevant WPS / PQR.
- Weld short to long pipe sections, elbows, reducers in multiple positions (flat, horizontal, round, overhead) meeting finished product & quality standards.
- Inspect welds visually and with measuring tools (check weld size, penetration, undercut, porosity, spatter) and identify any type defects for rework.
- Carry out finishing (grinding, blending), removal of slag/spatter, cleaning of welded components to meet surface quality and dimensional tolerances.
- Work with fitters, fabricators, material handling (cranes/hoists) to ensure correct positioning, clamping, fixture set-up of parts.
- Maintain welding consumables, set-ups, ensure equipment is in good working condition perform basic maintenance as required.
- Maintain accurate records of welding jobs-job number, part number, WPS used, welder’s parameters, consumable usage, inspection results, re-work.
- Ensure safety, housekeeping, 5S standards are met in welding shop (use of PPE, hot-work permits, ventilation, fire prevention, safe handling).
- Support continuous improvement- reduce re-works, optimize weld process, improve through output and quality.
- Coordinate with QA/QC for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) preparation or follow-up as required.
- Meet production schedule targets for boom pipe, Deck pipes, elbow, reducer fabrication, ensuring timely handover to assembly or shipping.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Proficient in pipe welding fabrication- ability to weld pipes, elbows, reducers used in concrete pumping vehicles.
- Strong ability to read welding drawings, welding symbols and interpret production work orders.
- Skilled in multiple welding processes (GMAW/MIG, TIG) and in welding in all positions.
- Knowledge of welding codes/standards, e.g., structural and pressure pipe welding norms.
- Good physical fitness, manual dexterity, ability to handle heavy equipment and work in noise environment.
- Strong attention to detail, quality orientation, ability to detect weld defects and take corrective action.
- Good communication and team working skills, coordinating with fabrication, QA/QC, material handling and production teams.
- Safety-first mindset strict adherence to EHS norms, hot-work permits, PPE and welding safety.
- Basic data entry skills for recording welding parameters, job details, consumables usage.
- Preferred experience with heavy-fabrication for concrete-pumping applications, steel pipe systems, large diameters.
Qualifications and Experience
- Certificate in Welding (ITI Welding/Fabrication) or Diploma in Mechanical/Fabrication Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 to 7 years of welding experience in pipe fabrication / heavy-fabrication environment experience with large diameter pipes, elbows, reducers is a plus.
- Experience working with boom pipe components or equipment for high-rise concrete-pumping vehicles would be advantageous.
- Certification in welding (e.g. according to company WPS/PQR, or recognized welding certification) is desirable.
