Key Responsibilities
- Programming: Develop, test, and modify programs using machine controllers.
- Machine Setup: Perform tool setup, set work coordinates (offsets), and execute "dry runs" to prove-out new programs.
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret complex engineering drawings, technical specifications, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Tooling & Fixtures: Select the optimal cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and work-holding fixtures for specific materials.
- Quality Control: Conduct inspections of finished parts using precision measuring instruments (e.g., Vernier calipers, micrometers, CMM).
- Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve machining errors, collision risks, and program bugs.
- Efficiency: Optimize cycle times and reduce material waste to improve overall production. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of CNC machinery, particularly the horizontal multi-pallet systems typical of an HMC.
- Controller Familiarity: Proficiency in reading and writing code for common controllers like Fanuc, Siemens, or Mazak.
- Software: Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, UG NX).
- Education: Usually requires an ITI, Diploma, or Degree in Mechanical or Production Engineering. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
