Production Engineer – Fabrication Unit: Daily Responsibilities
Production Planning: Review approved fabrication drawings, BOMs and the daily/weekly production plan. Decide job priorities based on project schedules, material availability and dispatch requirements. Allocate work to fit-up, welding, grinding, drilling and finishing teams, and set shift-wise production targets.
Material & Drawing Control: Confirm availability of plates, structural sections, pipes and bought-out materials before starting fabrication. Ensure only the latest approved drawings and revisions are being used on the shop floor. Verify material grades, sizes, identification and traceability where required.
Fit-Up & Fabrication: Supervise marking, cutting, edge preparation, drilling, bending, assembly and fit-up. Check critical dimensions, orientation, hole locations, member identification and tolerances before releasing assemblies for welding. Minimize wrong fabrication and rework.
Welding Control: Coordinate welders and welding activities according to approved WPS and drawings. Ensure correct electrode/wire/consumables, weld size, sequence and joint preparation. Monitor distortion and dimensional deviations during fabrication and arrange corrective action immediately.
Production Monitoring: Monitor actual output against daily targets throughout the shift. Identify bottlenecks involving manpower, machines, cranes, drawings, materials or inspection. Maintain a daily production report showing planned quantity, achieved quantity, balance quantity and reasons for shortfall.
Quality Coordination: Offer completed fit-up and welding stages to QC for inspection. Coordinate dimensional inspection, visual welding inspection and NDT wherever applicable. Close QC observations/NCRs and ensure rejected material or fabrication is not moved to blasting/painting without clearance.
Manpower & Equipment: Allocate welders, fitters, helpers, gas cutters, machine operators and riggers according to workload. Coordinate availability of EOT cranes, welding machines, cutting machines, drilling machines and other equipment. Report breakdowns immediately to maintenance.
Safety & Housekeeping: Conduct or participate in toolbox talks and ensure PPE compliance. Monitor safe lifting, welding, gas cutting, grinding and material handling. Maintain clear working areas, proper stacking and good housekeeping.
Blasting, Painting & Dispatch Coordination: Release fabricated items for blasting/painting only after required inspection clearance. Coordinate identification/marking so members remain traceable after painting. Verify fabrication completion against packing/dispatch lists and coordinate with stores, QC and dispatch teams.
End-of-Day Reporting: Record daily tonnage or quantity produced by project/work order, manpower utilization, machine status, pending inspections, rework, material shortages and production constraints. Prepare the next day's priority list before closing the shift.
