Role Overview
A Woven Fabric Designer is responsible for creating, developing, and innovating fabric designs for woven textiles. The role combines technical knowledge of weaving (yarn, construction, loom settings) with creativity to produce commercially viable fabrics for garments, home textiles, or exports.
Key Responsibilities
1. Fabric Design & Development
- Develop new woven fabric designs (stripes, checks, dobby, jacquard, textures)
- Create seasonal collections based on market trends and buyer requirements
- Work on yarn-dyed and piece-dyed fabric concepts
- Develop swatches and sampling plans
2. Technical Planning
- Decide fabric construction:
- Warp & weft yarn counts
- Reed & pick (EPI/PPI)
- GSM and finished width
- Prepare weave designs (plain, twill, satin, dobby, jacquard)
- Create CAD designs using software like NedGraphics, Textronics, or Adobe Illustrator
- Coordinate with loom technicians for feasibility
3. Sampling & Production Coordination
- Work closely with weaving unit to develop samples
- Monitor sample quality, shrinkage, and finish
- Approve lab dips, yarn shades, and fabric finishes
- Troubleshoot issues like:
- Shrinkage
- Skewing
- GSM variation
4. Trend & Market Research
- Study global and domestic trends (colors, textures, finishes)
- Analyze competitor fabrics and buyer samples
- Develop designs aligned with target markets (export/domestic)
5. Costing & Commercial Awareness
- Ensure designs meet target costing
- Optimize yarn usage and construction for profitability
- Work with merchandising and production teams
6. Documentation
- Maintain design sheets with full specs:
- Construction details
- Yarn consumption
- Dyeing/finishing instructions
- Maintain sample library and design archives
Required Skills
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of:
- Weaving fundamentals (warp/weft, EPI/PPI)
- Fabric structures (plain, twill, dobby, jacquard)
- Yarn types (cotton, viscose, blends, slub, etc.)
- Knowledge of loom types (rapier, airjet, shuttle)
Pay: ₹10,789.34 - ₹25,000.00 per month
