A MIG (Metal Inert Gas) Welder joins, fabricates, and repairs metal components using an electric arc and inert shielding gas. Responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, setting up welding equipment, preparing materials, performing precise welds, and inspecting the finished product for strength and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and accurately interpret engineering drawings, technical plans, and welding symbols.
- Machine Setup: Calibrate welding machines, set gas flow rates, select appropriate wire electrodes, and adjust amperage/voltage for optimal welds.
- Material Preparation: Measure, cut, clean, and assemble metal workpieces before welding.
- Execution: Perform high-quality MIG welds on various materials (e.g., steel, aluminum, stainless steel) in different positions
- Quality Control: Inspect welds for defects, cracks, and porosity to meet industry standards.
- Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on welding tools, torches, and equipment.
Core Requirements
- Education: High school diploma, completion of a formal vocational training program, or an apprenticeship.
- Certifications: Certifications such as AWS (American Welding Society) or equivalent National Trade Certificates (e.g., NTC).
- Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of metallurgy, wire feed speeds, and shielding gas ratios (e.g., CO₂ or Argon mixtures).
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy materials, and work in various environmental conditions.
- Attention to Detail: Precision and strong spatial reasoning to ensure structural integrity and measurements.
