Job Summary
As an Intermodal Dispatch & Supply Chain Coordinator at Safebridge Translog, you will manage the specialized lifecycle of containerized loads moving through major railyards, with a heavy focus on the Joliet, IL intermodal hubs. You will balance driver schedules, chassis availability, and rail cut-off times to maximize our fleet’s efficiency, avoid costly storage fees, and maintain peak profitability.
Joliet, IL intermodal/Drayage dispatch experience required: minimum 2 years
Core Responsibilities
- Intermodal Dispatching: Assign container and chassis moves to company drivers and owner-operators based on proximity, hours of service (HOS) availability, and specific railyard credentials.
- Railyard & Hub Coordination: Navigate daily operations across major Joliet-area hubs (e.g., Union Pacific Global IV, BNSF Logistics Park Chicago - LPC) and manage gate processes, container pre-pulls, and drop-and-hook schedules.
- Chassis & Asset Management: Track and optimize the utilization of ocean/rail chassis pools or private chassis to ensure drivers have the proper equipment before arriving at the stack.
- Demurrage & Per Diem Mitigation: Closely monitor "Last Free Days" on containers to plan routes and drop-offs efficiently, completely minimizing storage fees and per diem penalties.
- Driver Support & Safety: Act as the primary point of contact for drivers; provide clear dispatch instructions (including container numbers, seal numbers, and rail booking codes), assist with yard navigation, and ensure all safety and ELD protocols are followed.
- Proactive Tracking: Monitor all shipments via GPS and ELD systems, tracking rail arrivals and departures to provide real-time updates to customers and steamship lines.
- Administrative Accuracy: Ensure all Interchange Receipts (J1), Bills of Lading (BOL), and equipment status records are uploaded accurately into our systems for prompt billing.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: 2–4 years of experience in trucking dispatch, with a specific focus on intermodal drayage or railyard operations.
- Logistics Knowledge: Strong understanding of DOT regulations, FMCSA compliance, chassis pool operations, and intermodal billing structures.
- Tech Proficiency: Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), ELDs, and intermodal platforms/portals (e.g., eModal, rail-specific tracing systems).
- Communication: Exceptional negotiation and coordination skills, with the ability to maintain professional relationships with drivers, steamship lines, and railyard operators.
- Geography: Strong familiarity with the Chicago/Joliet freight corridors, railyard locations, and local weight/bridge laws for heavy container hauling.
What We’re Looking For:
The "Safety & Compliance" Mindset: Someone who understands that intermodal hauling requires strict adherence to rail safety rules and equipment inspection standards.
The Problem Solver: A professional who stays calm under pressure when facing long railyard flip lines, gate delays, or chassis shortages.
The Growth Partner: We are scaling our fleet, and we want someone who is excited to help build the operational foundation of a growing company.
