We're hiring an IT Lead for a 20-year-old European e-commerce business going through an ownership transition. The founder built every system himself over two decades. Your job: capture that knowledge before he retires, then lead the modernisation of the tech stack.
This is a confidential search. We'll share the company name and full details once you pass initial screening.
What you'll do
Months 1–4: map everything
- Audit every login, API key, and credential. Nothing stays in one person's head or browser.
- Document the full system landscape: platform, hosting, integrations, data flows.
- Write SOPs for every IT process, internal and customer-facing.
- Set up a lightweight helpdesk and train the team to use it.
Months 1–6: extract the founder's knowledge
- Run weekly structured sessions with the outgoing founder.
- Walk through every system via screen-share. Document as you go.
- Ask "what happens when this breaks?" for every process — that's where the real knowledge hides.
- Build a searchable knowledge base so the business never depends on one person again.
Month 4 onward: build and run the roadmap
- Turn your findings into a clear-eyed assessment: what's working, what's fragile, what's holding growth back.
- Work with the GM and team to prioritise: eliminate, automate, outsource, or rebuild.
- Get the roadmap approved, then lead execution — platform migration, 3PL integration, CRM rollout.
- Hire and build a 2-person IT team under you as the role grows full-time.
What you need
- 4–6 years in a technical role, including 3+ years in e-commerce.
- Hands-on Shopify or Shopify Plus experience (or a comparable platform).
- A track record of documenting and systematising IT knowledge from non-technical people.
- Experience leading a platform migration or major system transition.
- Strong written English — you'll produce SOPs and reports for a non-technical GM.
- Experience managing vendors and agencies against SLAs.
Nice to have
- Klaviyo, Gorgias, or similar CRM/customer service platform implementation.
- Practical use of AI and automation tools (Zapier, Make, n8n).
- Experience hiring and managing a small technical team.
- Knowledge of European e-commerce: payments, logistics, VAT, GDPR.
How this role works Starts part-time (2–3 days/week) for the documentation phase. Shifts to full-time around month 6, once the roadmap is approved and execution begins. You'll need a minimum 4-hour daily overlap with Central European Time.
To apply Send your CV to [email protected], a short note on a platform migration or knowledge-transfer project you've led, and two references.
