The Role
Job Title: Senior SME – API Center of Excellence (CoE)
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Subject Matter Expert (SME) to drive API strategy, standards, and adoption across application development teams. This role sits within the API Center of Excellence (CoE) and is responsible for ensuring the design and implementation of high-quality, reusable, secure, and scalable APIs aligned with enterprise architecture principles.
Key Responsibilities
API Strategy & Governance
Define and enforce API design standards, guidelines, and best practices (REST, event-driven, GraphQL where applicable)
Establish governance models for API lifecycle management (design, build, publish, versioning, retirement)
Drive consistency in API design across domains and teams
Advisory & Enablement
Partner with application development teams to guide them in selecting the right API patterns (e.g., System, Process, Experience APIs)
Provide hands-on design reviews and architecture guidance
Act as a trusted advisor for API-led integration and modernization initiatives
API Design & Quality
Ensure APIs are designed for reusability, scalability, and performance
Promote API-first design using OpenAPI/Swagger specifications
Define and enforce standards for security (OAuth2, mTLS, etc.), versioning, and documentation
Adoption & Evangelization
Drive API adoption across the organization through workshops, training, and reusable templates
Build and maintain API design playbooks, reference architectures, and accelerators
Promote API product mindset and developer experience (DX)
Platform & Tooling
Work with API management platforms (e.g., Apigee, MuleSoft, Kong, Azure API Management)
Define CI/CD integration patterns for APIs
Enable API discovery via developer portals and catalogs
Collaboration
Work closely with Enterprise Architecture, Platform Engineering, Security, and DevOps teams
Align API initiatives with broader digital and integration strategy
Required Skills & Experience
10+ years in software engineering, integration, or API development
Strong expertise in API design principles (REST, event-driven architecture, microservices)
Hands-on experience with API management platforms (e.g., Apigee, MuleSoft, Kong, Azure APIM)
Experience with API specifications (OpenAPI/Swagger), API gateways, and developer portals
Strong understanding of API security (OAuth2, JWT, mTLS)
Experience in CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
Proven ability to influence and guide multiple development teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in setting up or working within an API CoE
Knowledge of domain-driven design (DDD) and API-led connectivity
Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)
Familiarity with event streaming (Kafka, messaging systems)
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
