A Senior Quality Engineer responsible for ensuring product quality throughout machining operations, from incoming material and in-process inspection to final inspection and PDI (Pre-Dispatch Inspection of machines casting components).
The role requires practical, hands-on experience in a machine-shop environment and the ability to work directly with production teams, operators, suppliers, and customers to prevent defects and maintain quality standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform in-process, final, and PDI inspections for machined components and assemblies.
- Inspect castings for visual defects, dimensional conformity, machining allowances, porosity, cracks, blow holes, and surface conditions.
- Verify CNC-machined parts against engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and approved samples.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, GD&T symbols, tolerance limits, surface-finish requirements, and inspection standards.
- Use and maintain measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, dial indicators, thread gauges, gauges, and CMM where applicable.
- Monitor CNC machining processes and identify quality issues related to tooling, fixtures, offsets, programs, material condition, and operator practices.
- Conduct first-off, patrol, in-process, and final inspections; release acceptable parts for the next operation or dispatch.
- Prepare inspection reports, PDI reports, NCRs, rejection notes, and corrective-action records.
- Investigate non-conformities using root-cause analysis and coordinate corrective and preventive actions with production and engineering teams.
- Ensure calibration status and proper use of inspection equipment.
- Support process improvements to reduce rejection, rework, scrap, and customer complaints.
- Coordinate with suppliers on casting and machining quality issues and verify corrective actions.
- Ensure adherence to customer requirements, quality plans, control plans, SOPs, and ISO 9001 or relevant quality-system requirements.
- Train and guide inspectors and shop-floor personnel on inspection methods, drawing interpretation, and quality awareness.
Desired profile:
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical/Production Engineering.
- Typically 3–7 years of quality experience in a machine shop, CNC machining, casting, automotive, engineering, or heavy-manufacturing environment.
- Strong practical knowledge of casting processes and common casting defects.
- Good understanding of CNC turning, VMC/HMC machining, tooling, fixtures, and machining-related defects.
- Proficient in drawing reading, tolerances, GD&T, and dimensional inspection.
- Hands-on, detail-oriented, disciplined, and comfortable working on the shop floor.
