Primary Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Lead Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and delivery of a next-generation Ophthalmology Imaging Viewer platform. The platform will enable clinicians and graders to review retinal and ophthalmic images, visualize AI-assisted findings, manage imaging workflows, and support clinical research and decision-making.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in medical imaging applications, cloud-native software development, modern web technologies, and integration of AI/ML algorithms into clinical workflows. The individual will lead a team of engineers, collaborate closely with Product Management, Clinical Experts, Data Scientists, and QA teams, and drive technical excellence across the platform.
Responsibilities:
Product Design & Architecture
-
Lead the architecture, design, and development of a scalable ophthalmology image viewing platform.

Define software architecture, coding standards, and technical roadmaps.

Drive cloud-native and microservices-based application development.
AI Integration & Clinical Decision Support
-
Integrate AI/ML models into image viewing workflows to assist clinicians and human readers.

Collaborate with Data Science teams to operationalize model deployment, monitoring, and performance evaluation.

Ensure AI outputs are presented in a clinically explainable and auditable manner.
Medical Imaging & Interoperability
-
Implement support for DICOM and ophthalmic imaging standards.

Develop image annotation, measurement, grading, and reporting capabilities.
-
Ensure compatibility with healthcare interoperability standards where applicable.
Engineering Leadership
-
Lead, mentor, and coach software engineers.
-
Conduct code reviews and architectural reviews.
-
Promote engineering best practices including test automation, CI/CD, security, and observability.

Manage sprint planning, technical backlog prioritization, and delivery commitments.

Drive technical innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.
Quality & Compliance

Ensure development aligns with software quality processes.

Support software validation and verification activities.

Maintain technical documentation required for regulatory and quality audits.

Implement secure coding practices and data privacy controls.
Required Skills & Experience
Experience
-
8+ years of software development experience.
-
3+ years of technical leadership experience leading engineering teams.

Proven experience building enterprise-scale imaging or healthcare applications.
-
Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
Front-End Development
-
Strong expertise in ReactJS, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3

Experience building high-performance Single Page Applications (SPA).

Experience with image-intensive applications requiring advanced rendering and visualization.
Medical Imaging
-
Experience with one or more imaging toolkits/frameworks CornerstoneJS, OHIF Viewer, OpenLayers, VTK.js, OpenCV

Strong understanding of DICOM, DICOMweb, Image annotation standards, Medical imaging workflows

Experience handling large image datasets and multi-resolution image pyramids.
Backend & Cloud Technologies
-
Strong experience with Node.js, Express.js, GraphQL, REST APIs

Experience with cloud platforms AWS, Azure, Google Cloud
-
Experience building microservices and event-driven systems.
Databases
-
Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Aurora, DynamoDB, MongoDB

Strong understanding of data modeling and performance optimization.
AI/ML Integration
-
Experience integrating AI/ML inference services into production applications.

Experience visualizing AI outputs within user-facing applications.

Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, ECS/EKS, CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in ophthalmology, radiology, pathology, or healthcare imaging domains.

Experience developing Software as a Medical Device (SaMD).

Familiarity with FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, HIPAA, GDPR, or related healthcare regulations.

Experience working with retinal imaging or ophthalmology AI products.

Knowledge of clinical trial imaging workflows and image grading systems.

Experience with image annotation platforms and medical AI validation processes.
Qualifications:
- B.E., B.Tech., M.E., M.Tech., MCA, or equivalent degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.

Advanced degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Medical Imaging, or Biomedical Engineering is a plus.
