Title : Assistant Chef
An assistant chef in a school supports the head chef by preparing nutritious meals, managing daily kitchen operations, and ensuring strict food safety. They help create student-friendly menus, accommodate dietary restrictions, maintain cleanliness, and temporarily manage the catering team when the head chef is absent.
Core Responsibilities
- Food Preparation & Cooking: Assist in washing, chopping, and preparing ingredients. Help cook, bake, and assemble nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for students and staff.
- Menu & Dietary Compliance: Help design seasonal menus. Safely prepare alternative meals for students with food allergies, intolerances, or specific religious dietary needs.
- Food Safety & Hygiene: Monitor and record food storage temperatures. Adhere to strict health standards by sanitizing equipment, sweeping floors, and washing dishes.
- Inventory & Stock Management: Receive deliveries, label ingredients, and monitor stock levels to ensure the kitchen has the necessary supplies.
- Team Leadership: Deputize for the head chef when necessary, overseeing the kitchen staff and meal service.
Essential Requirements
- Experience: Previous experience working in a high-volume commercial kitchen, school, or catering facility.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of nutrition, food allergens, and food safety regulations.
- Qualifications: Relevant culinary arts degree, food safety certification, and a cleared child protection/background check.
- Soft Skills: Ability to work quickly under pressure, communicate effectively with children and staff, and adapt to changing menus.
