Job Purpose
The ICU Nursing Staff is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients. The role includes continuous patient monitoring, administration of medications and treatments, maintaining accurate clinical documentation, assisting doctors during procedures and emergencies, and ensuring compliance with hospital policies, infection prevention practices, and NABH standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill patients as per the prescribed treatment plan.
- Monitor vital signs, neurological status, oxygen saturation, cardiac rhythm, urine output, and other clinical parameters.
- Assess and promptly report any deterioration in the patient's condition to the treating consultant/RMO.
- Maintain proper patient positioning, hygiene, nutrition, and pressure sore prevention measures.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living as required.
- Provide emotional support and maintain respectful communication with patients and attendants.
2. Medication & Treatment
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood and blood components strictly as prescribed.
- Follow the right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, right time, and right documentation principles.
- Monitor patients for adverse drug reactions and immediately report any abnormal findings.
- Maintain proper medication administration records.
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and checking of emergency and high-alert medications.
3. ICU Monitoring & Emergency Care
- Continuously monitor critically ill patients and identify early warning signs of deterioration.
- Assist doctors during emergency procedures, resuscitation, intubation, central line insertion, and other ICU procedures.
- Maintain readiness of emergency equipment, crash cart, ventilators, monitors, suction apparatus, and other ICU equipment.
- Participate effectively in Code Blue/CPR and emergency response activities.
- Ensure timely escalation of critical changes in patient condition.
4. Ventilator & Equipment Management
- Monitor patients receiving ventilator and other respiratory support as instructed by the treating team.
- Check ventilator settings and alarms as per medical instructions and report abnormalities immediately.
- Ensure proper functioning and cleanliness of monitors, infusion pumps, suction machines, and other ICU equipment.
- Report equipment malfunction to the concerned department without delay.
5. Documentation & Records
- Maintain accurate and complete nursing notes and ICU flow sheets.
- Document vital signs, intake/output, medication administration, procedures, patient condition, and nursing interventions.
- Maintain proper documentation of shift handover and critical events.
- Ensure all clinical records are completed accurately, legibly, and on time.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of patient information.
6. Infection Prevention & Control
- Strictly follow hand hygiene and standard precautions.
- Follow appropriate PPE and aseptic techniques during patient care and procedures.
- Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste as per hospital policy.
- Maintain ICU cleanliness and infection-control practices.
- Follow hospital protocols for prevention of HAIs, catheter-associated infections, ventilator-associated infections, and other healthcare-associated infections.
7. Handover & Communication
- Provide complete and structured handover to the incoming nursing staff.
- Communicate important clinical updates, pending investigations, medications, procedures, and patient risks during handover.
- Coordinate with consultants, RMO, nursing supervisors, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other departments.
- Communicate politely and professionally with patients and attendants.
8. Quality & NABH Compliance
- Follow all hospital SOPs, nursing protocols, clinical guidelines, and quality indicators.
- Comply with applicable NABH 6th Edition requirements.
- Participate in nursing audits, quality improvement activities, training programmes, drills, and competency assessments.
- Report incidents, near misses, medication errors, falls, pressure injuries, and other adverse events as per hospital policy.
- Participate in patient safety and risk-management activities.
9. Inventory & ICU Management
- Check availability of essential medicines, consumables, emergency drugs, and nursing supplies.
- Maintain proper stock records and inform the Nursing In-charge about shortages or expiry.
- Ensure proper identification and labelling of medicines, samples, and patient-related materials.
- Maintain proper housekeeping and organisation of the ICU nursing station and patient-care areas.
10. Professional Conduct
- Maintain professional behaviour, discipline, punctuality, and ethical standards.
- Maintain patient dignity, privacy, confidentiality, and safety at all times.
- Follow the hospital's code of conduct and departmental instructions.
- Avoid unauthorised mobile-phone use during duty hours.
- Perform duties responsibly during day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts as assigned.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification:
- GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) or B.Sc. Nursing.
- Valid nursing registration with the applicable State Nursing Council.
- Freshers may be considered based on hospital requirements.
Preferred Skills:
- Basic knowledge of ICU nursing and critical care procedures.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer/HIS knowledge.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Ability to recognise and respond promptly to emergencies.
- Willingness to work in rotational shifts.
Working Conditions
- Rotational day, evening, and night shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as per hospital requirements.
- Work in a high-acuity ICU environment requiring continuous patient monitoring and rapid response.
- Regular coordination with doctors, nurses, patients, attendants, and multiple hospital departments.
Pay: From ₹13,500.00 per month
