Category Analyst – Ecommerce
Job Description
Reports to: Business Head
Location: Mumbai — in office
Type: Full time
Experience: 2–4 years
Compensation: Depends upon overall knowledge & Interview
About the role
We sell across Nykaa, FirstCry, Ajio, Tata CLiQ, Myntra and our own Shopify store. We have a strong operations team running listings, dispatch, billing and reconciliation. What we don't yet have is someone who looks at all of it and tells us what to do next.
That is this role. You will own the answer to four questions we currently answer on instinct:
- What is actually selling, and in which size and colour, on which portal?
- What are we sitting on that isn't moving, and what should we do about it?
- Is our performance marketing agency earning its fee?
- Which prices and offers made us money, and which ones just gave away margin?
This is a commercial analysis role, not a reporting role. We do not want someone who compiles numbers and forwards them. We want someone who reads the numbers, forms a view, and argues for it — including when the view is inconvenient.
What you will ownEvery week
- Best-seller and worst-seller report by SKU, broken down by size and colour, per portal
- Portal gap sheet: which SKUs are live on which marketplaces, and which listings are missing or suppressed. This sheet becomes the listing team's work queue for the week.
- Flag any SKU at risk of stocking out or overstocking
Every fortnight
- Performance marketing agency review pack: blended ROAS across total ad spend and total revenue, new-customer acquisition cost reported separately from returning-customer revenue, and campaign-level observations
- Present it. You will be in the room when we review the agency.
Every month
- Pricing and offer post-mortem: which discount depths moved genuine incremental units, and which sold volume we would have sold anyway
- Ageing and non-moving stock report with a recommended action per SKU — liquidate, bundle, shift portal, or stop reordering
- Voice-of-customer note summarising what you learned from customer calls that month
Every quarter
- Size curve and colour mix recommendation that feeds directly into our next purchase order
- Category-level view of what to push, what to phase out, and where the gaps are
Ongoing
- A small batch of feedback calls to Shopify customers each month, chosen from your own analysis. When your report says a SKU has a high return rate, you call the customers who returned it and find out why. Roughly 5–8 calls a month — enough that your recommendations are grounded in what buyers actually say, not just what the return codes claim.
What success looks like
First 30 days. You will spend most of this month building plumbing, not insight, and that is expected. Our sales data sits in five separate seller panels, inventory in our internal system, ad data with the agency, and returns with the fulfilment team. Your first job is one consolidated view that pulls all of it together. Nothing useful happens until that exists.
By 60 days. Weekly best-seller and portal gap reports are running reliably and the listing team is working off your gap sheet.
By 90 days. You have delivered your first agency review, your first non-moving stock recommendation, and at least one pricing insight that changed what we did.
By 6 months. Our purchase orders are shaped by your size and colour analysis rather than by gut feel.
What we're looking forEssential
- 2–4 years in ecommerce, category management, marketplace operations or retail analytics
- Strong Excel or Google Sheets — pivots, lookups, index-match, large messy datasets. This is the core tool of the job.
- Hands-on familiarity with marketplace seller panels (Nykaa, Myntra, Ajio, FirstCry, Tata CLiQ or similar)
- Commercial thinking: you understand why contribution margin after commission, returns and ad spend matters more than gross revenue
- Willingness to speak to customers directly on the phone
- Comfortable telling the founder that something isn't working
Valued
- Apparel, kidswear or beauty category background
- Exposure to performance marketing metrics and how agencies report them
- Shopify admin experience
- SQL or Power BI — useful, but not what we're selecting on
Not required
- A data science background. This role is judgment and commercial sense applied to messy retail data, not modelling.
Selection process
1. Short introductory call
2. Practical exercise. We give you a real sales export and a stock file, both messy, and 45 minutes. You tell us what to reorder and what to stop. We're interested in your reasoning and in what questions you ask before answering, more than in the format of the output.
3. Discussion of your exercise with the founder
4. Reference check
Why this role is worth taking
You will report directly to the founder and your work will change what the business buys, prices and stocks. The recommendations you make are acted on within the same quarter, not filed. If you have been producing reports that nobody uses, this is the opposite of that.
