PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT – JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES, RULES & REGULATIONS (SOP)Purpose
The Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for assisting Consultants and Duty Medical Officers in delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The PA performs clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner, ensuring timely assessment, documentation, patient coordination, and adherence to hospital policies.
1. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Report to duty on time in complete uniform with hospital ID card.
- Assist Consultants and Duty Medical Officers during OPD, IPD, ICU, Emergency, and ward rounds.
- Follow hospital policies, medical ethics, and standard operating procedures.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Ensure courteous and professional communication with patients, relatives, and hospital staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and discipline in the assigned department.
- Perform duties only within the scope of practice and under the supervision of the treating doctor.
2. PATIENT CARE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive and prepare patients for medical examination.
- Record complete patient history and presenting complaints.
- Measure and document vital signs (Temperature, Pulse, Respiration, Blood Pressure, SpO₂).
- Assist in the physical examination of patients.
- Monitor patients and report any abnormal findings immediately.
- Prepare patients for investigations and medical procedures.
- Collect blood and other clinical samples as authorized.
- Assist with wound dressing and minor procedures.
- Administer oxygen therapy as directed by the physician.
- Monitor IV fluids and patient response.
- Provide first aid and emergency support when required.
- Educate patients regarding medications, diet, investigations, and follow-up as instructed by the physician.
3. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist consultants during OPD consultations.
- Accompany consultants during ward rounds.
- Prepare patient case sheets before rounds.
- Update patient progress notes under physician supervision.
- Assist in clinical procedures such as:
- Suturing assistance
- Central line insertion assistance
- Lumbar puncture assistance
- Pleural tapping assistance
- Ascitic tapping assistance
- ECG recording
- Nebulization
- Catheterization assistance
- Ryle's tube insertion assistance
- Arrange investigations as prescribed.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists.
4. EMERGENCY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies.
- Assist during CPR, BLS, and ACLS procedures.
- Prepare emergency medications and equipment.
- Assist in patient stabilization.
- Coordinate emergency investigations.
- Assist in transferring critically ill patients to ICU or Operation Theatre.
- Ensure emergency trolley/crash cart is readily available.
5. DOCUMENTATION RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including:
- Patient History Sheet
- Vital Signs Chart
- Progress Notes
- Investigation Request Forms
- Procedure Assistance Records
- Consent Forms
- Referral Notes
- Discharge Summary Draft (for physician review)
- Admission Documentation
- Emergency Case Records
6. MEDICATION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Verify physician's orders before carrying out instructions.
- Assist in medication preparation under supervision.
- Ensure medications are available before procedures.
- Observe patients for adverse drug reactions.
- Inform the physician immediately of any medication-related complications.
- Do not prescribe medications independently unless legally authorized and credentialed.
7. LABORATORY & DIAGNOSTIC COORDINATION
- Coordinate blood sample collection.
- Arrange laboratory investigations.
- Ensure timely transport of specimens.
- Follow up on laboratory and radiology reports.
- Inform physicians promptly about critical values.
- Coordinate ECG, X-ray, Ultrasound, CT Scan, MRI, and other investigations.
8. INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL
- Perform hand hygiene before and after every patient contact.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Follow standard precautions and isolation protocols.
- Maintain aseptic technique during procedures.
- Segregate biomedical waste correctly.
- Dispose of sharps safely.
- Report needle-stick injuries immediately.
- Support infection prevention initiatives.
9. EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT
Ensure the proper functioning and availability of:
- BP Apparatus
- Pulse Oximeter
- Thermometer
- ECG Machine
- Glucometer
- Oxygen Cylinders and Flow Meters
- Suction Apparatus
- Nebulizer
- Defibrillator (during emergencies)
- Emergency Crash Cart
Report any equipment malfunction immediately.
10. COMMUNICATION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communicate patient status promptly to the treating physician.
- Coordinate with Nursing Staff, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy, ICU, Operation Theatre, and Billing departments.
- Explain investigations and procedures to patients as instructed.
- Maintain professional communication with patients and relatives.
- Escalate emergencies without delay.
11. PATIENT SAFETY
- Verify patient identity before any procedure or investigation.
- Ensure informed consent is obtained before procedures.
- Follow patient safety protocols at all times.
- Prevent falls and injuries.
- Monitor high-risk patients closely.
- Report adverse events, near misses, and incidents immediately.
12. DAILY CHECKLIST
- Patient history completed
- Vital signs recorded
- Physician rounds attended
- Investigations arranged
- Reports reviewed with physician
- Procedures assisted

13. PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
- Be punctual and maintain regular attendance.
- Wear clean uniform, apron, and ID card.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Do not perform procedures beyond your authorized scope of practice.
- Do not accept gifts or money from patients or attendants.
- Avoid personal mobile phone use during duty except for official purposes.
- Maintain professional behavior and appearance.
- Participate in continuing medical education (CME) and hospital training programs.
14. REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES
Immediately report the following to the Consultant, Duty Medical Officer, or Department Head:
- Sudden deterioration of a patient
- Cardiac arrest or medical emergency
- Medication errors
- Abnormal laboratory results
- Equipment failure
- Needle-stick injury
- Infection control breaches
- Patient complaints
- Fire or safety hazards
- Adverse or sentinel events
