The Senior NICU Staff Nurse is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to neonates, including premature, low-birth-weight, critically ill, and ventilated babies. The role involves clinical supervision, monitoring of neonatal patients, medication administration, infection prevention, documentation, emergency response, and coordination with neonatologists and the multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
1. Neonatal Patient Care
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to newborns admitted to the NICU.
- Monitor vital signs, SpO₂, temperature, blood glucose, urine output, and other parameters as required.
- Closely observe premature, critically ill, and high-risk neonates for any change in condition.
- Maintain proper positioning, thermoregulation, feeding, hygiene, and comfort of neonates.
- Assist with kangaroo mother care and breastfeeding/expressed breast milk practices as per hospital protocol.
2. Critical Care & Ventilator Management
- Handle and monitor babies on ventilators, CPAP, HFNC, and other respiratory support systems.
- Assist doctors during intubation, resuscitation, procedures, and emergencies.
- Ensure proper functioning and readiness of monitors, ventilators, warmers, infusion pumps, and other NICU equipment.
- Identify and immediately escalate deterioration in the baby's condition.
3. Medication & Treatment
- Administer medications, IV fluids, antibiotics, blood products, and other treatments strictly as prescribed.
- Follow the Five/Seven Rights of Medication Administration.
- Calculate neonatal drug doses and infusion rates accurately.
- Maintain medication and treatment records.
4. Infection Prevention & Control
- Strictly follow hand hygiene and NICU infection-control protocols.
- Maintain aseptic technique during procedures and IV/central-line care.
- Follow protocols for catheter, ventilator, and feeding-tube care.
- Ensure proper segregation and disposal of biomedical waste.
- Maintain cleanliness and infection-free environment of the NICU.
5. Documentation & Records
- Maintain accurate nursing notes, observation charts, medication charts, intake/output records, and treatment records.
- Ensure proper documentation of all procedures, incidents, and critical events.
- Maintain shift handover and takeover records.
- Ensure timely updating of patient records in the HIS, where applicable.
6. Emergency & Resuscitation
- Respond promptly to neonatal emergencies.
- Be competent in NRP/neonatal resuscitation procedures.
- Ensure emergency equipment and resuscitation trolley are checked and ready.
- Assist the neonatologist during emergency interventions.
7. Senior-Level Responsibilities
- Guide and supervise junior NICU nurses and nursing assistants.
- Ensure proper allocation and completion of nursing duties during the shift.
- Conduct effective shift handovers.
- Monitor compliance with NICU SOPs and hospital policies.
- Identify gaps in nursing care and report them to the NICU In-charge.
- Support orientation and training of newly joined NICU staff.
8. Parent & Family Communication
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with parents/attendants.
- Explain routine nursing procedures and care instructions within the scope of nursing responsibilities.
- Support parents regarding breastfeeding, KMC, hygiene, and discharge-care instructions.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of neonatal nursing and critical care.
- Experience in managing premature and critically ill neonates.
- Practical knowledge of ventilator/CPAP/HFNC care.
- Good IV cannulation and neonatal medication administration skills.
- Knowledge of neonatal resuscitation and emergency management.
- Strong infection-control practices.
- Accurate documentation and handover skills.
- Good communication and teamwork.
- Ability to work calmly under pressure.
- Leadership and supervision skills.
Qualification
- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing
- Valid Nursing Council Registration.
- NRP certification/training preferred.
- NICU experience is mandatory.
- Exp 2 yo 3 Yrs Experience

The Senior NICU Staff Nurse will be expected to:

Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per hour
