Software Engineer Location – Pune (Prefferd)
What You Will Build The Belden Firewall (TBF) is our next-generation industrial firewall platform for OT/IT environments. It is a Linux-based embedded system built on Yocto, using nftables for packet filtering and deep packet inspection for industrial protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus. Our management UI is built on React and communicates with devices via RESTCONF. The core architecture and development is driven from our main office in Germany, and the Pune team works closely with them on implementation, testing, and feature delivery. Job Summary As the Lead Software Engineer in Pune, you are a hands-on technical leader who writes code, debugs complex problems, and drives feature delivery for the local team. You work alongside the Embedded Firewall Architect to turn architectural direction from our Germany headquarters into working software. You lead by example – owning implementation of modules, reviewing your team’s code, and ensuring quality across the board. Key Responsibilities Hands-On Development • Develop and maintain components of the firewall platform in C and Python, including nftables rule management, network stack modules, and system services. • Implement features and enhancements assigned to the Pune team, working within the architecture defined by the Germany engineering leadership. • Debug complex issues across the full stack – from kernel-level networking and packet processing to application-layer services. • Write and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, system-level) to ensure platform stability and quality. • Perform root-cause analysis on defects and regressions, collaborating with the Germany team on platform-wide issues. • Review code from the team and ensure consistency, quality, and alignment with the overall architecture. • Support integration testing across the embedded Linux platform, including Yocto builds, nftables configurations, and NETCONF/RESTCONF interfaces.
Expertise needed (Mandatory): • Strong C programming, data structures, algorithms, and debugging (GCC, GDB, Make). • Strong Linux knowledge: kernel basics, IPC, multi-threading, system programming. • Experience with embedded Linux distributions: Yocto, Debian, or Ubuntu. • Experience with nftables / netfilter for packet filtering and firewall rule management. • Working knowledge of NETCONF/YANG and RESTCONF for device management interfaces. • Solid understanding of networking: TCP/IP, L2 switching (802.1x, STP/RSTP/MSTP, VLANs), L3 routing (OSPF, BGP). • Solid understanding of network security: Firewall concepts, VPN, IPsec, NAT, ACL, IPS/IDS, DPI (DNP3/Modbus), PKI/SSL. • Experience working on networking or security appliances (firewalls, routers, gateways). • Good debugging and root-cause analysis skills across application and system level. • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and unit testing frameworks. • Proficiency in Python or Bash scripting. Good to have experience: • Experience with XDP/eBPF for high-performance packet processing. • Experience with Docker, containers, and virtualization in embedded contexts. • Familiarity with network operating systems from networking vendors. • Experience with packet generation and network test tools. • Interest in Linux kernel development.
