Job Purpose:
To provide safe, competent and compassionate nursing care to antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal mothers and newborns in the Labour Room by following hospital policies, clinical protocols, infection control practices and NABH quality standards, ensuring safe childbirth and maternal-neonatal wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Patient Care
- Provide holistic nursing care to antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal mothers.
- Monitor maternal vital signs and fetal heart rate regularly.
- Assist obstetricians during normal deliveries, instrumental deliveries and emergency procedures.
- Prepare the labour room for deliveries and ensure availability of required equipment.
- Perform newborn care immediately after birth, including initial assessment and stabilization.
- Assist in neonatal resuscitation when required.
- Maintain strict monitoring of labour progress using partograph.
- Ensure patient comfort, privacy and emotional support during labour.
B. Clinical Procedures
- Prepare patients for episiotomy, suturing and obstetric procedures.
- Assist doctors during cesarean section preparation and emergency obstetric interventions.
- Administer medications, IV fluids and injections as prescribed.
- Ensure safe administration of oxytocin, magnesium sulfate and other obstetric medications as per protocol.
- Provide breastfeeding guidance and postpartum care to mothers.
C. Infection Control & Patient Safety
- Adhere to hospital infection control protocols and aseptic techniques.
- Maintain sterile field during deliveries and procedures.
- Follow biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Ensure sterilization of instruments and labour room environment.
- Identify and report maternal or neonatal complications immediately.
D. Documentation & Records (NABH Compliance)
- Maintain accurate labour room registers and patient records.
- Document:
- Admission details
- Labour progress notes
- Delivery details
- Medication administration
- Newborn assessment
- Maintain partograph and nursing care records.
- Ensure documentation meets NABH documentation standards.
E. Equipment & Inventory Management
- Ensure availability and proper functioning of labour room equipment including:
- Fetal Doppler / CTG
- Delivery instruments
- Neonatal resuscitation equipment
- Suction apparatus
- Oxygen supply
- Report equipment malfunction to the concerned department immediately.
- Maintain stock of emergency drugs and consumables.
F. Patient Education & Counselling
- Provide education on:
- Labour process
- Pain management
- Breastfeeding techniques
- Postnatal care
- Family planning methods
- Provide emotional support to patients and family members.
G. Emergency Management
- Identify and respond to obstetric emergencies such as:
- Postpartum hemorrhage
- Eclampsia
- Fetal distress
- Cord prolapse
- Assist in maternal and neonatal resuscitation.
- Activate hospital emergency protocols when required.
H. Coordination & Teamwork
- Coordinate with:
- Obstetricians
- Pediatricians / Neonatologists
- Anesthesia team
- Operation Theatre staff
- Ensure smooth patient transfer to postnatal ward / NICU / Operation Theatre when required.
I. QUALITY & NABH RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow NABH standards and hospital quality policies.
- Participate in:
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Nursing audits
- Clinical meetings
- Infection control programs
- Report incidents, near misses and sentinel events as per hospital policy.

M. QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE
Essential Qualification
- B.Sc Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration with State Nurses and Midwives Council.
Experience
- Minimum 1–2 years experience in Labour Room / Obstetrics & Gynecology department preferred.
- Freshers with strong clinical training in midwifery may also be considered.
