Roles & Responsibilities:
A cardiovascular perfusionist is a specialized healthcare expert who operates extracorporeal circulation equipment, such as the heart-lung machine, during open-heart surgery. They temporarily assume the functions of the patient's heart and lungs, allowing the surgical team to safely operate on the heart.
Pre-Operative Responsibilities
- Equipment Setup: Prepares and inspects the heart-lung machine and other life support systems before every surgery.
- Patient Assessment: Reviews the patient’s medical history, lab results, and bloodwork to customize the bypass plan.
Intra-Operative Responsibilities
- Bypass Operation: Takes over cardiac and respiratory functions using extracorporeal circulation so the surgeon can work on a still heart.
- Vital Monitoring: Tracks real-time data regarding the patient's blood pressure, oxygenation, and systemic circulation.
- Temperature Regulation: Manages the patient's core body temperature using the bypass machine.
- Medication Administration: Delivers required drugs, anesthetics, and blood products directly through the bypass circuit.
- Blood Conservation: Operates cell-saver and autotransfusion machines to minimize blood loss and recover the patient's blood during surgery.
Post-Operative & Critical Care
- Weaning: Gradually transitions the patient off the heart-lung machine as the heart resumes its normal functions.
- Mechanical Support: Initiates and monitors extended life support systems like Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) or Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) in critical care units.
- Equipment Maintenance: Cleans, disinfects, and maintains complex perfusion devices according to safety standards.
Pay: ₹15,000.00 - ₹30,000.00 per month
