The Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining backend systems that support analytical applications, GPU-enabled workloads, and data-processing pipelines.
You will build scalable APIs, optimize database performance, develop asynchronous processing systems, and contribute to architectural decisions around scalability, security, reliability, and maintainability.
This is a senior-level position requiring strong technical judgment, ownership, excellent professional English communication, and the ability to collaborate effectively with frontend engineers, data scientists, DevOps engineers, and technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable backend systems supporting high-volume data processing and real-time analytics.
- Build reliable APIs using REST, WebSockets, and other web protocols for frontend applications and external integrations.
- Develop asynchronous task-processing systems for complex and long-running workloads.
- Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas, queries, indexes, and data models for performance and scalability.
- Work with Elasticsearch and other data-storage technologies where appropriate.
- Implement caching strategies using Redis or similar in-memory data stores.
- Build message-driven and asynchronous processing workflows using Celery, RQ, or similar technologies.
- Support backend services and workflows that interact with GPU-enabled environments and applications.
- Implement strong authentication, authorization, data-protection, and application-security practices.
- Design systems with reliability, auditability, operational resilience, backup, and recovery in mind.
- Build and maintain Docker-based applications, including efficient production-ready multi-stage builds.
- Collaborate with DevOps engineers on container security, deployment, and orchestration strategies.
- Provide technical guidance on backend architecture, scalability, maintainability, and performance.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering standards and documentation.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers and help improve overall engineering practices.
- Communicate technical decisions, requirements, issues, and solutions clearly in professional English.
- Collaborate across engineering, data, product, and infrastructure teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
Required QualificationsMandatory: Professional English Communication
- Excellent professional English communication skills are required.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English during technical meetings, interviews, architecture discussions, and day-to-day engineering collaboration.
- Strong written English skills for technical documentation, Git commits, pull requests, tickets, design documents, and engineering communication.
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Mandatory: Windows + NVIDIA RTX GPU
- Must have access to a Windows-based laptop or desktop.
- Must have an NVIDIA RTX 4050, RTX 4060, or RTX 4070 GPU.
- The Windows + RTX GPU environment must be available for development, testing, and/or GPU-related engineering workloads as required by the role.
- Mac-only or non-NVIDIA systems do not meet this requirement.
General Qualifications
- Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Significant professional experience designing and implementing production backend systems.
- Eligibility to obtain a Government of Canada Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
Mandatory Technical Skills
- Expert-level Python development experience.
- Strong experience with Python web frameworks such as Django/DRF, Flask, FastAPI, Sanic, or similar.
- Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, and performance tuning.
- Strong experience with Elasticsearch or similar NoSQL/search technologies.
- Production experience with Docker and containerized applications.
- Strong API design and development experience, including REST and WebSockets.
- Experience implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms.
- Experience with Redis or similar caching/in-memory technologies.
- Experience with asynchronous processing and message queues using Celery, RQ, or comparable tools.
- Strong understanding of software design patterns, clean architecture, and maintainable system design.
- Strong experience with Git and collaborative software-development workflows.
Preferred Qualifications

You must also be able to communicate effectively in professional English, collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines, and clearly explain technical decisions and solutions.
Because this role involves Windows-based GPU-enabled development/testing, candidates must have access to a Windows machine equipped with an NVIDIA RTX 4050, RTX 4060, or RTX 4070.
Strong communication, technical judgment, and collaboration skills are essential, as this role works closely with engineering, data, product, infrastructure, and technical leadership teams.
Final compensation will depend on the candidate's experience, technical expertise, and overall qualifications.
