Job Description
The Commies 3 job role is the entry level role in a professional kitchen setting. As a Commies 3, you will be expected to assist chefs in a range of food preparation skills such as cutting, cleaning, slicing, pounding, mashing, boiling, steaming, julienne, stewing, sauteing, deep-frying, and baking.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation:
- Basic Cooking Techniques: Learn and practice essential skills like chopping, slicing, dicing, portioning, and preparing ingredients for various dishes.
- Following Recipes: Accurately follow recipes and cooking instructions provided by the chefs.
- Ingredient Preparation: Prepare ingredients by washing, cleaning, and storing them properly.
- Assisting with Cooking: Assist chefs with cooking tasks, such as sautéing, grilling, baking, and steaming, under supervision.
- Basic Plating Techniques: Learn basic plating techniques to ensure dishes are presented attractively.
Kitchen Operations:
- Workstation Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized workstation, ensuring it is tidy and sanitized throughout the shift.
- Equipment Handling: Learn how to operate and maintain kitchen equipment, such as ovens, stoves, and fryers.
- Stock Management: Assist with stock rotation, inventory management, and receiving deliveries.
- Hygiene and Sanitation: Adhere to strict hygiene and sanitation standards in the kitchen.
- Cleaning: Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment and surfaces after use.
- Setting up and Breaking Down Stations: Help with setting up and breaking down workstations at the beginning and end of shifts.
Skills & Qualification:
- Basic Culinary Skills: Knowledge of basic cooking techniques, food preparation methods (chopping, portioning, etc.), and understanding of ingredients.
- Following Instructions: Ability to accurately follow recipes and instructions from senior chefs.
- Time Management & Organization: Ability to manage time effectively, organize tasks, and maintain a clean and organized workspace.
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with other kitchen staff.
- Hygiene & Safety: Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work long hours in a fast-paced, potentially hot environment.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to pay attention to detail in food preparation and presentation.
- Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with team members.
- Willingness to Learn: A passion for learning and a willingness to take direction from senior chefs.
- No Formal Education Required: While not mandatory, a culinary certificate or diploma can be beneficial.
- Experience: Some experience in a kitchen environment or as a kitchen trainee is often preferred.
