OT (Operation Theatre) Technician – Roles and Responsibilities
An OT Technician is a key healthcare professional who assists surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing staff in the operation theatre to ensure safe and smooth surgical procedures.
1. Pre-operative Responsibilities
- Prepare the operation theatre before surgery (cleaning, sterilization, arrangement)
- Check and arrange surgical instruments and equipment
- Ensure availability of sterilized linen, drapes, and consumables
- Verify functioning of OT machines (suction, cautery, anesthesia machine, monitors)
- Assist in patient shifting and positioning on OT table
- Help in pre-operative checklist and safety protocols (patient identity, consent, site marking)
2. Intra-operative Responsibilities
- Assist surgeons by passing instruments during surgery (scrub assistance)
- Maintain sterile field and ensure aseptic techniques
- Monitor OT equipment during procedure
- Handle surgical instruments safely and efficiently
- Assist anesthetist when required (positioning, equipment support)
- Maintain count of sponges, needles, and instruments
3. Post-operative Responsibilities
- Assist in shifting patient to recovery room
- Clean, disinfect, and re-sterilize OT instruments and equipment
- Dispose of biomedical waste as per protocol
- Re-organize OT for next procedure
- Document used materials and assist in OT records
4. General Responsibilities
- Maintain strict infection control practices
- Follow hospital OT protocols and safety guidelines
- Ensure proper maintenance of OT equipment
