An SPM (Special Purpose Machine) Design Engineer is responsible for conceptualizing and developing non-standard, customized machinery tailored to specific manufacturing needs. Unlike standard industrial equipment, SPMs require a high degree of innovation, precision, and integration of various engineering disciplines.
Job Summary
The SPM Design Engineer will lead the end-to-end design process—from initial client requirements and conceptualization to detailed 3D modeling and manufacturing support. This role focuses on creating automated solutions for assembly, testing, or processing lines using pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechatronic systems.
Key Responsibilities
Concept Development: Analyze customer technical specifications to create innovative machine concepts, including cycle time calculations and sequence of operations.
Detailed Design: Develop comprehensive 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings for mechanical components, assemblies, and layouts.
Material & Component Selection: Select appropriate materials, bought-out parts (bearings, sensors, motors), and standard components like 80x40 aluminum profiles or steel weldments.
System Integration: Design systems involving pneumatic/hydraulic circuits, servo motors, rotary actuators, and load cells for precision movement and testing.
Technical Documentation: Create Bill of Materials (BOM), assembly manuals, and maintenance guidelines.
Collaboration: Work closely with the manufacturing and assembly teams to resolve design-related issues during the build and commissioning phases.
Technical Skills & Qualifications
Proficiency in CAD Software: Mastery of SolidWorks, AutoCAD
Mechanical Knowledge: Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), engineering fits/tolerances, and structural analysis.
Automation Knowledge: Experience designing with pneumatic cylinders, pick-and-place units, and indexing tables.
Testing & Validation: Familiarity with integrating S-type load cells, LVDTs, and torque sensors for quality checking machines.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or Mechatronics.
Soft Skills
Problem-Solving: The ability to find creative solutions for unique manufacturing challenges.
Attention to Detail: Precision is critical, as a 1mm error can render a custom-built machine non-functional.
Communication: Clearly explaining complex technical concepts to both team members and clients.
Typical KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)
Design Accuracy: Minimal rework required during the assembly phase.
Timeline Adherence: Completing design releases within project deadlines.
Cost Optimization: Selecting cost-effective components without compromising machine performance or safety.
