The Designer and Trainer role sits at the heart of this mission, primarily within Kshamata
Unlimited (KULT), the organization's in-house social enterprise, as well as potentially across
the Kshamata Transformation Program (KTP) residential center and the Outreach Program.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Designer and Trainer for our social
enterprise, specializing in jewelry and tailoring. The successful candidate will be responsible
for both designing innovative products and providing training to members of our
community.
Key Responsibilities:
Designing Marketable Products The person in this role would be responsible for
conceptualizing and creating products that are both aesthetically compelling and
commercially viable. Kshamata Unlimited produces items across crafts such as tailoring,
jewellery-making, fabric painting, embroidery, block printing, embellishment, and artisan
work. The Designer would develop new product lines, refine existing ones, and ensure that
the work produced by the women meets quality standards that can sustain corporate
orders, e-commerce presence, and exhibition sales.
2
Stay updated on industry trends, materials, and techniques to ensure designs are relevant
and appealing. Collaborate with artisans and community members to translate designs into
high-quality products.
Training of Trainers: The trainer must be able to break down skills into accessible,
confidence-building steps, following Kshamata's "earn while they learn" philosophy. Skills
currently taught include tailoring, jewellery, fabric art, and embellishment, and the trainer
may introduce new crafts based on market demand and individual aptitude. Monitor trainee
progress and provide feedback and support to ensure successful skill acquisition. Provide
hands-on instruction and guidance to trainees, focusing on both technical skills and design
enhancement
Supporting the Hub-and-Spoke Model KULT operates through a centrally located Training
and Production Hub in Thane, with "spokes" extending into shelter homes, brothel
communities, and partner sites. The Designer and Trainer may need to work both at the
central hub and at decentralised community locations, adapting training delivery to varied
environments and constraints.
Community Engagement: Foster a supportive and inclusive environment within the
community, encouraging creativity, collaboration, and skill-sharing. Organize events,
workshops, and exhibitions to showcase the work of our artisans and engage with the wider
community.
Qualifications
Educational Background A degree or diploma in Fashion Design, Textile Design, Applied Arts,
Craft Design, or a related creative field is preferable. Equivalent professional experience in a
craft or design domain would also be considered.
Technical Skills Proficiency in one or more of the crafts central to KULT — tailoring and
garment construction, jewellery making, fabric painting, embroidery, block printing, or
surface embellishment. Familiarity with both traditional Indian craft techniques and
contemporary design trends would be valuable.
Previous experience in training, teaching, or mentorship, particularly in a community or
social enterprise context.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with
individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Team Orientation The ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team of social
workers, counsellors, and program managers, and to defer to the emotional and
psychological needs of beneficiaries as defined by that team, is essential.
Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask and
prioritize tasks effectively.
3
Passion for social impact and a commitment to empowering marginalized communities
through sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Why This Role Matters
At Kshamata, the training room is not just a workshop — it is often the first place a survivor
feels capable, valued, and seen. The moment a woman completes her first piece of jewellery
or sews her first garment and sees that it is beautiful enough to sell is often a turning point
in her recovery. The Designer and Trainer is the person who makes that moment possible.
The role carries both the craft and the care — and at Kshamata, you cannot have one
without the other.
