Job Purpose
The OPD Nurse will be responsible for providing efficient and patient-focused nursing care to ophthalmic patients attending the OPD. The role involves assisting ophthalmologists during consultations and minor procedures, preparing patients for examinations, maintaining clinical records, ensuring infection-control practices, and coordinating the smooth flow of patients through the OPD.
Key Responsibilities1. Patient Care & OPD Management
- Receive and assess patients attending the ophthalmology OPD.
- Record and monitor basic patient information and vital signs as required.
- Assist patients in understanding the OPD consultation and examination process.
- Ensure proper patient identification and maintain patient safety throughout the OPD visit.
- Support smooth patient movement between registration, diagnostic areas, consultation rooms, pharmacy and other departments.
- Provide appropriate nursing assistance to elderly, pediatric and physically challenged patients.
2. Ophthalmic Clinical Assistance
- Assist ophthalmologists during patient examination and consultation.
- Prepare patients for ophthalmic examinations and procedures.
- Assist with procedures such as eye dressing, eye irrigation and other ophthalmic nursing procedures as instructed.
- Prepare and maintain ophthalmic instruments, equipment and consumables required for OPD procedures.
- Assist doctors during minor ophthalmic procedures and follow the prescribed clinical protocols.
- Ensure appropriate preparation and handling of eye drops, medications and other clinical materials as per hospital protocol.
3. Pre- & Post-Procedure Care
- Explain basic pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions to patients as directed by the doctor.
- Monitor patients after minor procedures and immediately report any abnormal signs or complaints.
- Assist in preparing patients for investigations, procedures and surgeries when required.
- Ensure that patients understand medication and follow-up instructions provided by the medical team.
4. Infection Control & Safety
- Strictly follow hospital infection-control policies and standard precautions.
- Maintain proper hand hygiene and use PPE appropriately.
- Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection and sterilization of instruments as applicable.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the OPD procedure areas.
- Follow biomedical waste segregation and disposal procedures.
- Report any infection-control or patient-safety concerns to the Nursing In-Charge.
5. Medication & Documentation
- Administer medications and eye drops only as prescribed and according to hospital protocols.
- Verify the right patient, medication, dosage, route and timing before administration.
- Maintain accurate nursing records and procedure documentation.
- Ensure timely updating of patient records in the hospital/EMR system.
- Maintain records of consumables, medications and clinical materials as required.
6. Emergency Management
- Identify and promptly report emergency conditions or sudden changes in a patient's condition.
- Provide immediate basic nursing assistance during medical emergencies.
- Assist the medical team during emergency management and follow hospital emergency protocols.
- Ensure emergency equipment and essential supplies are available and ready for use.
7. Patient Counselling & Communication
- Communicate politely and professionally with patients and attendants.
- Provide basic guidance regarding investigations, procedures and follow-up as instructed by the clinical team.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
- Address patient concerns appropriately and escalate unresolved issues to the concerned senior staff.
8. Inventory & Equipment Management
- Check availability of essential OPD nursing supplies and consumables.
- Maintain proper stock levels and inform the Nursing In-Charge about shortages.
- Handle ophthalmic equipment and instruments carefully.
- Report malfunctioning or damaged equipment immediately.
- Ensure proper storage of medications, consumables and clinical supplies.
9. Coordination & Teamwork
- Coordinate effectively with ophthalmologists, optometrists, technicians, front-office staff, pharmacy and other departments.
- Support the Nursing In-Charge in maintaining smooth OPD operations.
- Participate in departmental meetings, training programmes and clinical audits when required.
- Follow all hospital policies, SOPs and instructions issued by the management.
Qualifications
- GNM / B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Valid nursing registration with the applicable State Nursing Council.
- Previous experience in ophthalmic/eye hospital nursing is preferred.
- Freshers with relevant nursing qualifications may also be considered based on organizational requirements.
