Main Roles of a Purchase Engineer
1. Vendor Identification & Development
- Search and evaluate suppliers/vendors
- Compare quotations and negotiate pricing
- Develop new vendors for cost and quality improvement
- Maintain supplier relationships
2. Procurement Planning
- Understand project/material requirements from engineering or production teams
- Prepare purchase plans based on demand forecasts
- Ensure timely availability of materials
3. Technical Evaluation
- Study technical specifications, drawings, BOQs, datasheets
- Ensure purchased items meet engineering standards
- Coordinate with design, QA/QC, and project teams
4. RFQ & Tender Management
- Prepare and send RFQs (Request for Quotation)
- Analyze techno-commercial bids
- Finalize suppliers after technical and commercial comparison
5. Purchase Order Management
- Create and release Purchase Orders (POs)
- Track PO status and delivery schedules
- Ensure proper documentation and approvals
6. Cost Control & Negotiation
- Negotiate best price, payment terms, and delivery conditions
- Reduce procurement costs without affecting quality
- Perform market price analysis
7. Inventory Coordination
- Coordinate with stores and warehouse teams
- Avoid material shortages or excess inventory
- Monitor stock levels
8. Quality & Compliance
- Ensure material quality and certifications
- Follow company procurement policies
- Handle inspection and vendor compliance requirements
9. Logistics & Delivery Follow-up
- Track shipment and transportation
- Resolve delivery delays
- Coordinate with logistics teams
10. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain procurement records
- Prepare MIS reports, cost reports, vendor reports
- Use ERP systems like SAP, Oracle, or Tally
