The Category Buyer – Packaged Food will be responsible for managing sourcing, assortment planning, vendor relationships, and category performance for packaged food products. The role requires a strong understanding of organic/FMCG retail, pricing strategies, and demand planning to drive category growth and profitability.
Key ResponsibilitiesCategory Management
- Manage end-to-end category ownership of packaged food products (organic, healthy, and gourmet segments).
- Develop and execute category strategies aligned with business goals.
- Plan assortment, pricing, promotions, and product lifecycle management.
Sourcing & Vendor Management
- Identify, evaluate, and onboard new vendors/brands (especially organic & sustainable products).
- Negotiate pricing, margins, trade terms, and promotional support.
- Maintain strong relationships with suppliers to ensure consistent supply and innovation.
Inventory & Demand Planning
- Monitor stock levels and ensure optimal inventory turns.
- Collaborate with supply chain teams to reduce stock-outs and minimize wastage.
- Forecast demand based on sales trends, seasonality, and promotions.
Pricing & Profitability
- Ensure competitive pricing aligned with market trends.
- Track margins and profitability of the category.
- Drive cost optimization initiatives.
Market & Trend Analysis
- Analyze consumer trends, competitor assortments, and pricing benchmarks.
- Identify opportunities for new product introductions in organic and healthy packaged foods.
- Leverage data insights to improve category performance.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Work closely with marketing for promotions and campaigns.
- Partner with store operations to ensure execution excellence.
- Coordinate with finance and supply chain for smooth operations.
Key Requirements
- Experience: 3+ years in category buying/merchandising (FMCG or retail preferred).
- Strong knowledge of packaged food category, preferably organic/healthy products.
- Proven experience in vendor negotiations and category performance management.
- Analytical mindset with proficiency in Excel or data tools.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced retail environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in modern retail, e-commerce, or organic food industry.
- Understanding of consumer behavior in health & wellness segment.
- MBA or relevant degree in business, supply chain, or retail management.
