Overview

Archie is an internal web tool supporting Innovation and Architecture Review process. It serves as the central hub for application reviews and is used by teams across the business – from expert advisory teams to non-technical business users and citizen developers.

This Lead Application Developer role is a step up from our existing developer position. You will act as the technical lead for Archie – owning code quality, steering architecture decisions, and driving engineering best practices – while still spending significant time hands-on in the codebase. You will work closely with the Product Team that defines requirements and priorities, but you will be the primary voice on how things get built.

Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Direction & Decisions

Own implementation approach and architecture choices for the Archie platform; propose and drive refactors when warranted.
Make day-to-day technical trade-off decisions – refactor vs. ship, sequencing within sprints, build vs. buy.
Define and enforce coding standards, patterns, and best practices across the codebase.
Evaluate and recommend technology or tooling changes that improve reliability, developer experience, or performance.
Act as the go-to for infrastructure-level decisions (app-service config, database schema evolution, blob-storage strategy) without needing deep Azure networking knowledge. Execution & Engineering Oversight
Conduct PR reviews on all code changes; provide direct, constructive feedback on quality, performance, and maintainability.
Ensure tickets move to completion; surface blockers early and escalate when needed.
Maintain sprint-board hygiene – tickets should accurately reflect reality (shipped / in-review / stuck).
Drive knowledge sharing with any additional developers – codebase walkthroughs, feature documentation, onboarding. Hands-On Development
Remain the primary developer implementing features, bug fixes, and potential refactoring of underlying logic.
Stay close to the codebase at all times; handle complex tickets personally.
Write appropriate tests to improve reliability and maintainability across the application.
Tasks will range from smaller changes and bug fixes to large features and architectural refactors. CI/CD & DevOps
Own the CI/CD pipeline end-to-end; propose and implement improvements to reduce or eliminate deployment downtime.
Support and improve deployment processes across GitHub Actions and Azure App Service.
Proactively identify reliability risks and build monitoring or ing where gaps exist. Collaboration with Product Team
Partner with the Product Team on requirement gathering; push back constructively on scope, feasibility, and timelines.
Provide technical input during sprint planning and sprint reviews to ensure business alignment.
Communicate progress, risks, and solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Tech Stack

RequirementsMust-Have
8+ years of strong Node.js + React application development experience.
Demonstrated experience in application infrastructure and architecture – you should be comfortable designing system components, not just consuming APIs.
Proven track record of owning code quality across a team or project – PR reviews, coding standards enforcement, technical debt management.
Experience acting as a tech lead or senior IC steering technical direction on a product.
Solid CI/CD experience (GitHub Actions / Azure App Service preferred); able to design and improve pipelines, not just use them.
Working knowledge of PostgreSQL – schema design, query optimization, migrations, troubleshooting.
Methodical approach to design, implementation, and testing; strong testing mindset.
Ability to work independently – gather requirements, execute, and report progress/solutions clearly. Good-to-Have
Experience with Azure ecosystem beyond App Service (Blob Storage, Key Vault, App Insights, etc.).
Familiarity with Drizzle ORM or similar modern TypeScript ORMs.
Experience working with AI-generated codebases (Archie has been primarily built using AI coding tools).
Prior experience mentoring or onboarding junior developers.
