Job Description: Healthcare Database DesignerJob Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and security-conscious Healthcare Database Designer to join our growing health-tech team. In this role, you will be the architect behind our data infrastructure, responsible for designing, modeling, and implementing robust, scalable, and highly secure databases. Because you will be handling sensitive Protected Health Information (PHI), your designs must seamlessly balance lightning-fast performance with ironclad compliance standards.
If you love transforming complex clinical workflows into elegant data models and care deeply about data integrity, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Database Architecture & Modeling: Design and implement relational (SQL) and non-relational (NoSQL) data models optimized for clinical workflows, patient registries, and healthcare analytics.
- Interoperability Integration: Ensure database structures support industry-standard healthcare protocols such as HL7, FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), and DICOM.
- Security & Compliance: Architect data schemas with built-in security controls, ensuring strict adherence to HIPAA, HITECH, and GDPR regulations. Implement data masking, encryption at rest/in transit, and robust audit logging.
- ETL & Data Pipelines: Develop and optimize complex Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to ingest data from diverse sources like Electronic Health Records (EHRs), medical devices, and lab systems.
- Performance Tuning: Monitor, analyze, and optimize database performance, index strategies, and query execution plans to ensure high availability and minimal latency for frontline healthcare providers.
- Collaboration: Partner with software engineers, data scientists, and clinical stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into technical specifications. Crucial Requirement: Data Governance
Every schema and table you design must prioritize patient privacy. You will be expected to advocate for strict data governance and zero-trust data access patterns across all environments.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: 7+ years of experience in database design, data modeling, or database architecture, with at least 5 years specifically within the healthcare domain.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong expertise in relational database management systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle) and familiarity with NoSQL solutions (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
- Healthcare Standards: Deep understanding of medical coding systems (ICD-10, SNOMED-CT, LOINC) and healthcare data exchange standards (FHIR/HL7).
- Tools: Proficiency in data modeling tools (e.g., Erwin, ER/Studio, or Lucidchart) and advanced SQL scripting.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
