Lead Engineer – BESS (Technical Capability Owner)Job Title: Lead Engineer – BESSLocation: Pune / Coimbatore (India)Reports to: Practice / Engineering Head – Solar & StorageType: Full‑time, Technical Lead / Capability OwnerRole summaryYou will own the technical capability for BESS within Arbutus, leading our approach to storage on large‑scale and hybrid RE+BESS projects and acting as the primary subject‑matter expert for internal teams and external clients. You will define methods, guide modelling and design decisions, lead key advisory assignments (LTA/OE/feasibility/EYA) and help build a small, high‑calibre storage team over time.Key responsibilitiesLead BESS scopes across technical advisory and engineering mandates for grid‑scale and hybrid RE+BESS projects.Define and standardise methodologies for BESS sizing, dispatch modelling and performance assessment; review and sign‑off models built by specialists.Lead technical review of BESS designs from OEMs/EPCs, covering system architecture, PCS, EMS/controls philosophy, safety systems and integration with PV and grid.Drive technical due diligence on storage assets and portfolios, including design maturity, technology choice, grid code aspects, warranties and augmentation strategy.Provide high‑quality technical input into RFQs/RFPs, EPC/OEM selection and contract schedules related to performance guarantees, testing and availability.Coordinate closely with PV, grid, civil and construction monitoring teams to ensure integrated hybrid solutions and coherent risk coverage.Represent Arbutus as the lead BESS expert in client meetings, lender workshops and technical clarification calls.Mentor and develop BESS specialists and junior engineers through structured guidance, model and report reviews and targeted training.Engage with OEMs, integrators and technology providers, and contribute to thought‑leadership content on BESS and hybrid RE+BESS.Desired profileBachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Electrical / Power Systems / Energy / Controls Engineering (or equivalent).8–12+ years’ experience in renewable power systems, with at least 4–5 years in utility‑scale BESS and/or hybrid RE+BESS engineering or advisory roles.Demonstrated experience leading large BESS or hybrid projects through feasibility, design review and execution support stages.Strong conceptual and practical understanding of BESS technologies, architectures, EMS/controls strategies, safety and commercial drivers.Ability to guide Python‑based modelling workflows, challenge assumptions and ensure investment‑grade quality of outputs.Solid consulting skills: client management, stakeholder communication, structured writing and presentation.Experience working with international clients and multi‑disciplinary, distributed teams.
