Job Description for a PPMC Role in an OSD Plant
An OSD (Oral Solid Dosage) plant manufactures tablets, capsules, and powders. A PPMC professional in an OSD facility ensures that machines (granulation, compression, coating, and packaging) run efficiently without running out of raw materials.
The general responsibilities of a PPMC professional in an OSD plant include the following key areas:
1. Production Planning & Scheduling
- Master Production Schedule (MPS): Convert sales forecasts and marketing orders into monthly, weekly, and daily plant manufacturing schedules.
- Capacity Planning: Analyze plant capacity (manpower and machine hours) across OSD processing stages like Granulation, Compression, Coating, and Blister/Bottle Packing.
- Sequencing: Sequence batches carefully to minimize downtime caused by intensive product-to-product line clearance and machine cleaning.
2. Material Control & Inventory Management
- Material Requirements Planning (MRP): Calculate the exact quantities of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), excipients, and primary/secondary packaging materials needed.
- Stock Optimization: Maintain optimal stock levels to prevent stockouts while avoiding high inventory holding costs.
- Tracking Ageing Stock: Monitor near-expiry, slow-moving, and non-moving (SLOB) inventory to minimize material write-offs. [1, 2, 3]
3. Cross-Functional Coordination
- Procurement: Coordinate with the purchasing team to fast-track the arrival of delayed raw or packaging materials.
- Quality Assurance (QA) & Quality Control (QC): Track material release statuses with the lab to ensure approved materials are ready for the production floor.
- Warehouse & Logistics: Align with the warehouse for raw material dispensing and the timely dispatch of finished goods.
4. Systems, Data & Compliance
- ERP/SAP Execution: Execute production and inventory modules in ERP systems like SAP PP/MM.
- Variance Analysis: Review "Plan vs. Actual" performance metrics regularly to identify production bottlenecks.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all planning documentation aligns strictly with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Typical Candidate Profile & Requirements
- Education: B.Pharm, M.Pharm, M.Sc., or an MBA in Supply Chain / Operations.
- Technical Skills: Hands-on experience with SAP (PP/MM modules), Advanced Excel, and data visualization tools like Power BI.
- Domain Expertise: A strong understanding of core OSD processes
