Key Roles and Responsibilities of a School Bus Driver
1. Safe Transportation
- Drive the school bus safely and responsibly along designated routes.
- Follow all traffic laws and school transportation regulations.
- Adjust driving to accommodate weather, road, and traffic conditions.
2. Student Safety
- Ensure students board and exit the bus safely.
- Monitor student behavior while on the bus.
- Enforce school transportation rules and report serious disciplinary issues.
- Assist younger students or students with special needs when necessary.
3. Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus.
- Check brakes, lights, tires, mirrors, emergency exits, and safety equipment.
- Report mechanical problems or maintenance needs promptly.
4. Route Management
- Follow assigned routes and schedules.
- Maintain accurate pickup and drop-off times.
- Communicate delays or route issues to transportation supervisors.
5. Emergency Response
- Respond appropriately to accidents, breakdowns, or medical emergencies.
- Evacuate students safely when required.
- Administer basic first aid if trained and authorized.
6. Record Keeping
- Maintain required logs and reports.
- Record mileage, incidents, inspections, and student attendance if required by the employer.
- Complete accident and incident reports accurately.
7. Communication
- Maintain professional communication with students, parents, teachers, and transportation staff.
- Report safety concerns, student issues, or route changes to supervisors.
8. Compliance with Regulations
- Maintain a valid commercial driving license and required certifications.
- Follow school district policies and government transportation regulations.
- Participate in required training and safety programs.
