We are looking for a motivated and hands-on Mechanical Engineer to join our robotics R&D team. The role is focused on the design, simulation, prototyping, and testing of robotic arm mechanisms, including links, joints, actuator mounts, sensor integration, grippers, and supporting structures.
This is an early-stage robotics startup, so the ideal candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-moving R&D environment where designs are built, tested, improved, and iterated quickly. You will work closely with electronics, firmware, and software teams to develop practical robotic systems from concept to prototype.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical components, assemblies, and full robotic mechanisms using CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
- Develop mechanical designs for robotic arms, joints, linkages, end effectors, actuator mounts, sensor mounts, and structural frames.
- Design and integrate motors, servos, gearboxes, bearings, shafts, sensors, fasteners, and cable routing into robotic systems.
- Perform basic and intermediate engineering calculations, including stress, torque, load, thermal, fatigue, and structural checks.
- Use simulation tools to validate mechanical designs through FEA, motion studies, kinematic analysis, and dynamic analysis.
- Build robot models with accurate kinematics, dynamics, joints, linkages, and contact properties.
- Support forward and inverse kinematics calculations, Degrees of Freedom selection, workspace analysis, and linkage optimization.
- Work with control, electronics, firmware, and software teams to ensure the mechanical system supports the complete robotic architecture.
- Support prototype fabrication using 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, sheet metal, and other manufacturing methods.
- Test prototypes, identify mechanical failures, diagnose root causes, and implement design improvements.
- Prepare and maintain technical drawings, GD&T, Bills of Materials, assembly instructions, and engineering documentation.
- Participate in design reviews, vendor discussions, component selection, and project planning.
Required Skills
- Strong CAD skills in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, CATIA, AutoCAD, or similar CAD software.
- Good understanding of mechanical design for robotic systems, especially arms, linkages, joints, grippers, and actuator-driven mechanisms.
- Understanding of kinematics, inverse kinematics, Degrees of Freedom, linkage design, torque requirements, and workspace limitations.
- Knowledge of GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerances, fits, and manufacturing drawings.
- Basic FEA knowledge for stress, thermal, structural, and fatigue validation.
- Understanding of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, including additive, subtractive, and forming processes.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and mechanical assembly.
- Ability to create and manage Bills of Materials, part lists, documentation, and design revisions.
- Basic understanding of closed-loop control systems, actuators, sensors, and how mechanical design affects control performance.
- Working knowledge of MATLAB, Simulink, Simscape Multibody, Gazebo, or ROS-based simulation tools is preferred.
Good to Have
- Experience with engineering analysis tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, COMSOL Multiphysics, Star-CCM+, or similar FEA/CFD software.
- Familiarity with ROS2, Gazebo, Python, or C++.
- Experience designing robotic arms, mobile robots, gantries, grippers, or automation systems.
- Experience with actuator selection, servo sizing, gearbox design, bearing selection, and structural optimization.
- Understanding of dynamic structural analysis under transient, harmonic, vibration, or impact loading.
- Experience taking a design from concept to CAD, simulation, prototype, testing, and redesign.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated project experience in mechanical design, robotics, automation, or product development.
- A portfolio, project examples, CAD models, prototypes, or previous work samples are strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and willingness to work hands-on.
